New post office puts stamp on city hall
By Penny Rathbun, Staff writer
It is now possible to mail packages and letters in the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center.
With a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday, U.S. Post Office representatives, city staff members, and Mayor Mike Simpson celebrated the opening of a contract postal unit within city hall this week.
Customers will be able to buy stamps, mail letters and packages at the CPU located just across from the windows where utility bills are paid.
Simpson also said that City Manager George Purefoy was instrumental in getting a post office placed inside of city hall.
“It is significant that we have three CPUs in a community this size,” said Carl January Jr., U.S. Postal Service district manager. “There is likely more here because of Frisco’s growth.
He said the U.S. Postal Service is looking for businesses interested in having a CPU located inside their business. The business must meet certain criteria, be able to be bonded and be in a good location.
The new one in Frisco city hall will sell all of the latest stamps. “We’re encouraging customers,” said January. “Don’t wait in line. Come to the library, city hall, see the mayor and buy stamps and thank the mayor.”
He said email has caused first class mail to decrease by one percent, but there are new services available on line. “We look at the Internet as a partner.”
Ken Richards of Little Elm will be running the city hall CPU. He retired after working for the post office for 39 and one-half years and decided that he had to have a job again. “I like to work in a nice happy atmosphere,” he said. “That’s what I hope to create here. I have a lot of fun with this group of people over here in Frisco.”
