Parents learn how to prevent teenage drug use at FISD drug forum

Published: Saturday, November 3, 2007 11:28 AM CDT
Don’t leave home without it is good advice for parents, but the advice applies to much more than credit cards these days.

“Parents, do not go out of town when you have a kid in high school. First, your prescription drugs will be gone,” said student Regan Brown at the Frisco ISD Drug Forum this week.

She was one of seven speakers at the forum Monday at Centennial High School.

Brown has been sober for two years. “I drove drunk more times than I can count,” she said.

“You’ve got to pay attention and you’ve got to be a parent,” was another piece of advice she gave.

The Frisco Police Department set up a mock bedroom to show where drug supplies and paraphernalia are typically hidden. Hollowed out books are common as are containers made to look like soft drink cans or spray cans.

Frisco Police Officer Brandi Werner demonstrated how things can be hidden in shoes, pillows, and pillowcases. Drug pipes are made to masquerade as highlighters or lipsticks.

Undercover officers displayed boxes of drug paraphernalia as well as other objects that had been turned into pipes such as plastic bottles.

Pictures of various illegal substances and a photo of a girl before she became addicted to heroin and a photo after she had been addicted for a few months presented the graphic reality of drug addiction. The photos looked almost as if they were of two different people.

Wendy Lowe, RN, coordinator of emergency medical services at Medical Center of Plano, and Sabina Stern, program coordinator for the Collin County Substance Abuse Coalition, also spoke.

Tony Rike, Frisco Police Student Resource Officer at Pioneer Heritage Middle School, said that marijuana is the most popular illegal drug today and that the marijuana of today is much stronger than it was 20 or 30 years ago.

Rike said the top two drugs teenagers abuse are alcohol and prescription drugs. Users will frequently help themselves to prescription drugs in the medicine cabinet. Hydrocodone is a favorite. So are depressants.

Robitussin is an over-the-counter drug frequently abused. The process is called robo-tripping.

Frisco resident Misty Davis shared one of the most moving stories. Davis lost a son to an overdose of drugs when she thought her son had stopped his drug use.

Gayle Jensen, director of the Seay Behavioral Health Center and LPC Gayle Jensen-Savoie told parents to stay involved with the lives of their children. “Set lines and boundaries for them. Tell them every day, ‘Do not use drugs, do not smoke,’” she said.

Parents Diane and Chris Liggett came to the forum because they wanted to be more informed. “I’m here because I have three kids and I want to learn more about it. I grew up with a brother that did drugs,” Diane Liggett said.

“I thought it was a good forum. Now they need to do this for the kids,” she added.
