Frisco focusing efforts squarely on McKinney
BY ANDREW MAY, Staff Writer
The Raccoons planned on lacing up the sneakers today in the final non-district game of the season. At the last minute, Wylie backed out after revamping its district schedule, leaving a void that couldn’t be filled in time. The loser in it all turns out to be McKinney.
Rather than focusing any of its attention on the Pirates, Frisco has spent the uncharacteristic off-week gearing up for the Lions.
“We’ve done something every day in practice to prepare for McKinney,” head coach Eric Green said. “Hopefully that will be to our advantage.”
The Kentucky commitment is averaging 20.8 points per game and can light up defenses from anywhere on the court. He has also been the focus in practice this week.
Green will utilize different defensive looks against Vilarino, mixing and matching zone and man-to-man, as well as personnel.
“You can’t do the same thing with him all the time,” Green said. “You’ve got to make him work hard to score.”
Making Vilarino defend is also a priority. The more energy he exhausts without the ball in his hands could equate to tired legs late in the game.
And it is in the waning minutes that Frisco’s fate is usually determined. Four of the five losses this season have come by six points or less. Three of the six wins have been decided by a single basket. It seems the Raccoons gravitate towards games that finish in nail-biting fashion.
“We’ve done a much better job being on the right end of those (this season),” Green said. “We’ve been a lot more consistent this year.”
Since winning the Frisco Classic, the Raccoons have lost three of four. After beating a strong 5A Irving MacArthur team in the opening round of the Allen Tournament last week, Frisco fell to Allen and W.T. White by a combined 11 points.
“I thought the kids did a good job going toe-to-toe with them,” Green said. “We’ve played a tough 5A schedule. That toughens you up for district play.”
Having faced a multitude of styles and versatile athletes, the Raccoons should be as prepared as any 9-4A team to handle any opponent.
“We are happy about where we are,” Green said. “We understand what it’s going to take to win. I think we’ll be ready.”
