Centennial cross country reloads without Reveal

Published: Thursday, August 21, 2008 8:37 PM CDT
Life after Cole has officially begun for the Centennial boys cross country team.

After graduating Cole Reveal, the best distance runner in program history, the expectations are sure to change, right? Well not exactly.

Head coach Tommy Newton said the goal of getting to state as a team remains firm. It is sure to be complicated by the loss of Reveal, who individually qualified for state as a junior and won his second straight district gold medal as a senior before finishing as the regional runner-up. He also finished fifth at the 2007 state track and field championships in the 1,600 and eighth in the 3,200.

“Any time you lose a runner of that quality you are going to miss him,” Newton said. “He was a good runner for us. But there are enough quality kids to fill in his spot and make our goal a reality.”

Senior Kyle Garcia has been overshadowed by Reveal but not because of a lack of talent. Garcia was second at district last season, fourth at regionals and 23rd at state. Though Reveal usually had a better closing sprint-like kick, it was only enough to put minor separation between himself and his budding teammate. Reveal topped Garcia by some 24 seconds at district, but that margin was minimized each of the next two meets.

Safe to say the program is still in great hands with Garcia as the clear-cut No. 1.

“If you ask Kyle, he would expect to do better than what Cole did,” Newton said. “He knows his role and what is expected of him.”

As for becoming the leader of the pack, Newton declared that Garcia has already stepped into that role.

“He has really embraced that over the summer,” Newton said. “He has put in a lot of work and made a lot of improvements.”

Centennial also graduated Dan Martin, Adam Cummings and Cody Jones, who cracked the top 20 at the 2007 regional championships. Soren Thompson, who placed 32nd at regionals, will likely emerge as the No. 2 guy. From there, Cameron Pulsifer, Tyler Shipman, Eric Thompson and Connor Gillette will fill in.

“We’ve got guys that are ready to take the lead as far as keeping up the tradition,” Newton said. “If we can stay healthy and everybody performs to expectations, I think we’ve got a good shot (to qualify for state).”
