Lady Raccoons getting key contributions from multiple sources
BY RICKY MOORE AND ANDREW MAY, Staff Writer
Offensive versatility hasn’t been an issue for the Lady Raccoons in recent years. Shutting down the initial options only opens the door for other players to deliver the dagger.
So when Flower Mound Marcus all but eliminated the impact Pepperdine signee Shay Cooney-Williams and Abilene Christian commitment Makenzie Simon had on Tuesday’s game, it was to only be expected that someone else would make the Lady Marauders pay. Enter Tiffany Moore and Kendall Schwantz.
The junior duo shouldered the offensive load, combining for 82 percent of Frisco’s points in a highly-competitive contest against 5A Marcus.
Marcus’ Adrianne Easley and Hailie Sample showed determination by grabbing five consecutive offensive rebounds during a flurry of nearly point-blank shots in the paint.
The problem was none of the shots would fall and eventually a Frisco player corralled a rebound to end the threat.
“We finally got in there and grabbed it,” Frisco head coach Bob Rose laughed.
Marcus (6-5) had another chance seconds later to tie the game but couldn’t as the Lady Marauders lost to Frisco, 55-51.
“We just couldn’t put shots down when we needed to,” Marcus coach Kit Kyle said. “We had that one crucial possession when we had five offensive boards and didn’t have any of them go down. I thought that was a momentum changer.”
After Rose called timeout with 59 seconds to play, Easley and Sample trapped Schwantz and forced a turnover on a jump ball. Seconds later an errant pass led to a turnover and a 53-49 lead after Schwantz scored the last of her game-high 23 points. Schwantz lit up Marcus from deep, connecting on 5-of-7 shots from three-point range.
Marcus cut the lead to two when Easley, who finished with a team-high 20 points, scored off a runner in the lane. Frisco, the state’s 11th-ranked team in Class 4A according to the most recent Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, countered with a basket by Cooney-Williams for a 55-51 lead.
“We never gave up tonight,” Kyle said. “They have some all-star players and I thought we hung with them.”
Trailing 27-22 at halftime, Marcus put together furious third-period rally that saw the Lady Marauders cut Frisco’s lead to two points three times before tying the game at 36-36 on a floater in the lane by Easley.
The highly-touted and versatile Moore, who scored 22 points and yanked down 14 rebounds, answered with a three-pointer to push the lead back to three points. The Lady Raccoons led 41-38 entering the fourth period.
Marcus’ Raven Short kept the Lady Marauders in the game with 16 points, including two third-period three-pointers.
Rose said he is pleased with the contributions he is getting from all five starters and his bench.
“It’s nice having more than one kid that can score points,” he said. “It’s even better that nobody has to score for us to win.”
