Lady Raccoon offense as potent as ever
BY ANDREW MAY, Staff Writer
Frisco girls basketball coach Bob Rose changed the name of his team’s mascot from Lady Raccoons to Runnin’ Raccoons when he arrived on campus because he wanted to set the tone for his preferred run-and-gun style.
Never before has his team’s tempo reached this level. For the second game in a row Friday, Frisco put more than 80 points on the board, an average of 20+ per quarter. It led to an 85-50 walloping of Liberty, anything but a district doormat. Five Lady Raccoons scored 14 or more points.
Frisco (24-3, 9-0), which appears headed to its second straight undefeated 9-4A campaign, is averaging 76.9 points in district play. When the squad advanced to the regional semifinals last season, it went for 63 per game. On the way to the state semifinals in 2007, the team was good for just more than 66 a night.
“We’ve been our own worst enemy in the past,” head coach Bob Rose said. “There is a patience, a calmness that’s nice about this year’s group.”
The Runnin’ Raccoons have consistently made their name in the first quarter. Rose said his team places an emphasis on the opening eight minutes to squash opponents’ confidence. Only Wakeland has taken a lead into the second quarter against Frisco, which outscored district foes 189-84 entering Thursday’s game at McKinney.
“The kids come out excited and know how important it is to start the game quickly,” Rose said. “We talk about it all the time. You’ve got to get out of the gate fast.”
Frisco senior guard Shay Cooney-Williams scored 17 points in the Liberty blowout to reach 1,509 for her career. The Pepperdine commitment is one of 55 area players and four Frisco ISD players nominated to the 2009 McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Team.
