Lady Titans rout Royse City in playoff debut
FROM STAFF REPORTS
MESQUITE---With his team ahead by 22 points in the final minutes of the fourth quarter Tuesday, Centennial girls basketball coach Wesley Charles was barking at his players to “get stops.”
It’s that kind of intensity that allowed the Lady Titans to easily win their playoff debut, dismantling Royse City, 58-38, in a Class 4A Region II bi-district game at Poteet High School.
Centennial (19-14) led wire to wire and never felt threatened after racing to a 14-5 lead six minutes into the first quarter. Behind 11 first-half points from senior guard Brittany Barton, the Lady Titans led by 15 points at the break.
Junior post Katie Brakner helped Centennial outscore Royse City in every quarter with her toughness in the paint on both ends of the floor. She dumped in 16 of her own and made sure Royse City senior post Kellie Wyrick was a non-factor. Wyrick, the team’s second-leading scorer behind Raven Alexander, finished with 15 points, though 11 of those came in the final four minutes when the outcome had already been decided. Alexander was limited to just three points, a dozen below her season average.
It was just Royse City’s second loss of 2009 and by far its most lopsided of the season.
Meanwhile, it was Centennial’s third-largest margin of victory this season. The Lady Titans advanced to the area round with the win and will play Dallas Carter later this week. Carter crushed Conrad, 66-47, Monday at Ellis Davis Field House.
