Parade, Pooches and Patriots on the Green at Watters Creek

Published: Thursday, May 21, 2009 10:17 AM CDT
The Fourth of July is a day for family fun and a time to celebrate our country’s independence n and what better way to do so than by creating lasting memories at Watters Creek’s first annual Parade, Pooches and Patriots on The Green celebration.

Festivities include a kid-and-pooch patriotic parade and costume contest. Children of all ages are welcome to decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers and scooters and join the short 15-minute parade around the center. Canines should come in costume, on a leash and ready to parade.

Participation, admission and parking are free. Entry is required before the kid-and-pooch patriotic parade and costume contest. Motorized vehicles are not permitted in the parade. Water will be available for parade participants and dogs. Judging will occur on the parade route. Prizes for the best patriotic kid-and-pooch will be awarded based on originality, creativity and best display of red, white and blue. Winner does not need to be present.

Before and after the parade, clowns, face painters and balloon artists will mingle with the crowd on The Green. The fun continues with giveaways and other American-themed hands-on children’s crafts and activities. Participants will also be encouraged to sign a star in honor of someone they know who has served in the armed forces and place it on the Patriot Wall located adjacent to The Green. A short video message is scheduled to be sent to North Texas from troops serving overseas.

Snack Packs will be available for purchase on The Green from participating restaurants. Food and beverages are also available for purchase from more than a dozen Watters Creek restaurants.

Families are also encouraged to bring care package items they would like to donate to soldiers serving overseas. These items will be collected onsite and packaged and shipped to military troops. Items cannot include perishable food or candies that melt, alcohol, cigarettes or aerosol spray cans. Soldiers enjoy disposable cameras, personal hygiene products, pre-paid phone cards, playing cards, AA batteries, energy bars and gum. Troops also appreciate small stuffed animals that they can give to Iraqi, Kuwaiti and Afghani children.

The Fourth of July activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration for parade and costume contest is from 11 a.m. to noon, with the parade beginning promptly at noon. The patriotic costume contest winner will be announced at 1 p.m. on The Green’s stage.
