Playing golf helps Frisco’s needy

Rory Ragsdale hit the links Monday, but he wasn’t playing hooky from his job at Fiserv.

“No, no,” Ragsdale said, laughing. “Everyone knows I’m here and with a colleague from work.”

Ragsdale and three others formed one of 36 teams participating in the Mayor’s Classic golf event to benefit Frisco Family Services and Frisco’s neediest citizens. Although a downpour of Noah proportions almost drowned the event Monday morning, organizers and golfers pulled together to pull it off at the Stonebriar Country Club.

“This is a great cause,” Mayor Maher Maso said. “I’ve invited everyone to come out, have some fun and do a good thing for Frisco.”

Ragsdale said it was his first time to play the Mayor’s Classic, which is in its 7th year.

“This is a fantastic cause and I’m glad to be a part of it,: said Ragsdale, who lives in Wylie. “I bought the Super Ticket, which gives me two mulligans, and I will probably need them.”

The early afternoon event included a round of golf, raffle, and prizes for various accomplishments, such as a hole-in-one.

“Unfortunately, no one made a hole-in-one,” said FFSC executive director Jill Cumnock, “but we did have a great event, despite the rain.“

The rain actually brought cooler weather, Cumnock said, “. . . and our golfers were not complaining about that.”

The typical golfing event has raised $85-90,000 over the last several years, Cumnock said.

“And we may have fallen a bit short of that, given the economy,” she added, “but we are still paying bills, so we don’t have a final figure yet.”

Cumnock said she wants to thank all the participants, including title sponsor Baylor Medical Center.

Winners of various prizes and contests are as follows from Cumnock’s notes:

* Putting challenge: Adrian Avila.

* Longest drive winners: Craig Hagan

and Mike Lanford,

* Closest to the Pin winners: Steve Burris and Matt

Engels.

* Fourth Place: Bill Keaton, Donna Keaton, Baileigh Darnell and John Stigliano.

FFSC to give to a client who was a Senior Citizen who could benefit
