Take a 'Ghost Walk' this weekend

Published: Friday, October 23, 2009 8:17 PM CDT
Neighborhoods in McKinney will be filled with kids dressed up as everything from witches to spacemen to ghosts for Scare on the Square and Halloween.

However, some parts of McKinney might have actual ghosts.

Chestnut Square is bringing back their second annual "Ghost Walk" for Saturday, Oct. 24 and Friday. 30. The annual historic tour will take people on tours through some of McKinney's most haunted hot spots including Chestnut Square's Historic Village and the old downtown courthouse, currently home to the McKinney Performing Arts Center.

Cindy Johnson, Chestnut Square's executive director, said it's no secret why they brought back their annual Halloween haunt. Last year's "Ghost Walk" attracted over 1,200 people in a single night.

"We're hoping we get over 1,600 in one night this year," Johnson said.

The tour will let patrons walk through buildings and structures in and around the downtown area that have several reports of repeated haunting activity. Storytellers will also be on hand to give patrons the history of the buildings and the ghost stories that continue to haunt them.

"One of the stories downtown is at the MPAC, the old courthouse," Johnson said. "People over and over again claim to see a lady in white in the southeast window. The story is that there was a lady who was divorced back in the 1800s and she killed herself after her divorce was finalized at the courthouse."

Some of the more recent stories come from business that have relocated their stores and restaurants in some of McKinney's oldest buildings such as Churchill's British Restaurant and Pub, formerly known as The Londoner.

"They seem to have a gentlemen who is still hanging around there throwing silverware around and make a big wreck," Johnson said. "They also have (a story) of a woman who came to an untimely end."

The tour will also features paranormal researchers from the Texas Paranormal Advanced Research Team who have investigated the downtown buildings and documented sightings from their outings including pictures, stories and movies.

Johnson said the "Ghost Walk" is just another creative way of teaching citizens the history of their city.

"It's a fun way to get them interest in history," she said. "We're just telling stories that have been out there for a long time and we're documenting them. We see it as perpetuating the legends of Collin County."

Tickets can be purchased at the Chestnut Square Historic Village located at 315 S. Chestnut Street on the night of the event or online at www.chestnutsquare.org.
