Maia Wilson in “Strings of Color” concert Saturday
Staff Reports
Timeless pieces by Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, Kool & the Gang and a special tribute to Michael Jackson will be presented in the "R&B Through the Years" concert, the third annual Black History Month performance by the Strings of Color Orchestra. Among the SOC orchestra members is Maia Wilson, Frisco, on violin.
Showtime is 7 p.m. Saturday at The Eisemann Center-Bank of America Theater, Richardson. In addition to orchestra, vocal talents will be contributed by Andrea Williams and six-year-old Kyrah Williams. The show opens with the neo-soul sounds of
local band Soul Kallab, featuring works by Ledisi, Erykah Badu and Musiq
“Since R&B has been a staple in the African-American community for
years, it just seemed appropriate for our annual Black History month
concert,” said SOC founder and director Ron Planks. “I believe we are performing a lot of music that all listeners, especially lovers of R&B will be able to relate to."
Now in its third year, this is also the orchestra's third Black History Month concert. Planks said the audience has grown each year.
"Our concert is a great cultural activity celebrating Black History Month. We really want this to be a staple for years to come, a concert that community members will look forward to and get excited about every year," he added.
Designed for up and coming young musicians, Strings of Color Orchestra members range from middle school to college-level experience. Hopeful students from across north Texas auditioned for the orchestra last summer. Planks, director of the award-winning Plano ISD Williams High School Orchestra, founded SOC in 2007.
