Henry’s Ice Cream
By Kim Nguyen, knguyen@acnpapers.com
In the last month to purchase Girl Scout cookies, a local business is celebrating all the hard work of local Scout groups.
Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream, a Plano-based ice cream parlor, will be hosting its 17th annual Girl Scout Day on Saturday to reward local Girl Scout troops for their cookie sales.
“These girls do so much hard work throughout the year, not only during the cookie sales,” said Henry Gentry, owner of the shop.
From January through March, Gentry would purchase two boxes of any flavor cookie from each scout that comes into the ice cream store. By the time Girl Scout Day arrives, Henry’s has backstocked more than 30 cases of cookies.
“I write about 30 checks at a time, each is worth $7,” Gentry said. “I will give one check to any Girl Scout coming into the store with her uniform and order form and buy two boxes from her.”
Gentry estimates that he has purchased cookies from more than 200 Girl Scouts -- a number that grows each year as the word spreads -- so far this year.
“I bet some of these Scouts come from as far as Wylie or Garland,” he said.
Each box of cookies is stored until the week before the event. Employees crush the cookies and the crumbs go into an ice cream mixture that will complement and highlight the cookie’s flavor. Henry’s manufactures all nine Girl Scout cookie flavors into a creamy ice cream. Each year, when the Girl Scouts release a new cookie flavor, Henry’s makes a new ice cream flavor.
The newest addition to the Girl Scout Cookies family is the Thank U Berry Munch, a cookie made with berries and white fudge chips.
“We came up with the recipe almost instantaneously,” Gentry said. “We’re making the ice cream with black raspberry ice cream with the cookie crumbled into it.”
Some ice cream recipes are longtime favorites at Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream, while others were created specially for the Girl Scout cookies.
The class favorite is the ice cream based on the Lemon Chalet Crème cookie. My Mother’s Lemon Pie ice cream is already a crowd-pleaser at Henry’s, so to make the ice cream, employees would add Lemon Chalet Crème cookie crumbles.
However, the Girl Scouts of America issued a withdrawal of certain batches of Lemon Chalet Crème cookies after the organization received complaints from customers of an “off” taste and smell,” according to their Web site.
While the organization reports that there are no known safety issues involved and the cookies are safe to eat, a replacement of the affected batches of Lemon Chalet Crème cookies was issued.
Though not all batches are affected, Gentry decided to take the safe route and not make the lemon cookie flavor this year.
“There’ll be some disappointment because so many people love that flavor, but there will be plenty of other cookie-flavored ice creams to choose from,” Gentry said. “Better safe than sorry.”
Gentry said Thin Mint and Samoa ice creams are also very popular flavors.
Celebrity scoopers are also a highly coveted position during Henry’s Girl Scout Day. In previous years, former Mayor Pat Evans, Plano Chamber of Commerce President Brad Shanklin and Junior League of Plano officials had served as celebrity scoopers.
This year, Henry’s will offer the title to members of the Plano Chamber of Commerce via raffle.
Gentry said he is anticipating at least 300-400 people to attend the special event on Saturday.
Girl Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms to receive special recognition at Girl Scout Day at Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. Attendees coming into the ice cream shop during the hour-long celebration will receive free ice cream. Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream is located at 2909 W. 15th Street in central Plano.
