So what? I’m gonna start a fight!

Published: Wednesday, March 17, 2010 7:04 PM CDT
Fight fans that came to the Metroplex over the weekend, but only stopped at Cowboys Stadium Saturday night for Manny Pacquiao versus Joshua Clottey undoubtedly missed the best fight of the weekend.

That could be seen Friday at Kimbrough Stadium as the Plano East and McKinney Boyd boys soccer team were involved in a full-out rumble that would have made the Jets and Sharks jealous.

But you already knew that, hopefully reading my story and checking out the excellent photos from our photographer Ronnie. Those items ran Sunday in Plano and McKinney and we did get some criticism for running them, which I expected.

The funniest email I think I got was from a parent who said I was lucky it wasn’t their kid who was mentioned in the article or in any of the pictures.

Uh-oh.

What does that mean? I’m starting to understand where these violent tendencies might come from.

All kidding aside, I think we covered the game correctly and what happened after the match furthered that belief. The on-site security officers were called to the field to watch the postgame handshake just in case tempers flared again.

Also after the game, one of the East players discussed the possibility that one of his teammates could have been paralyzed during the fracas. That may have been unlikely, but plenty of blood was spilled and this wasn’t simply a case of tempers flaring. More punches were thrown and landed than Clottey managed all night Saturday in Arlington and several soccer players were thrown face first down to the track Friday night.

That being said, some credit has to go to the coaches for getting things settled down eventually. East head coach Rick Woodard tried to prevent his bench players from jumping into the brawl and Boyd head coach Daniel Lowe tried to break up the fight as it largely took place by his sideline.

Lowe also put out a valid explanation as to how things got out of hand as he mentioned the officials as being somewhat to blame.

Lowe is absolutely right.

That officiating crew did a terrible job of keeping the game under control, as evidenced only minutes before the fight broke out when the referees did nothing to enforce the distance on an East free kick despite words being exchanged from either side. The officials didn’t even intervene after some pushing and shoving.

What are they there for then?

Tempers eventually subsided and the match was completed.

This, however, isn’t the first time a soccer team from Boyd has had a run-in with a Plano ISD school.

Last season, the girls team from Plano West played Boyd to a draw in Plano and accusations were levied that Lady Broncos fans hurled insults at both the Lady Wolves players and coaching staff.

The concern over the incident was so great that additional PISD personnel traveled with West later in the season when the team went to play at Boyd.

Thankfully nothing more came of that.

But if it would have, we would have covered the incident the same way we did Friday.

Even if that meant I would have to face the wrath of an e-mailing parent.
