Get ready for hurricanes, back to school with help from LE Public Library

Published: Thursday, August 12, 2010 12:43 PM CDT
Did you know that August 11 marked the first day of the 2010 hurricane season which runs through November 30? Though Little Elm may not get hit by a hurricane, it does not keep us from being affected by the storms that they cause. Some helpful sites to help you prepare for storms and hurricane season include: Governor Rick Perry’s site http://governor.state.tx.us/hurricane/14712/ ; Ready America www.ready.gov; and of course our very own Little Elm Fire Department’s site, which has some very helpful local, as well as state and federal information and links http://www.littleelm.org/index.aspx?nid=205. Stay tuned for more information in the future because September is National Preparedness Month.

Another thing to be prepared for is going back to school. Back to school events that involve school supplies include the Back to School Extravaganza on August 14 at 11a.m. held at the Love Temple church (1-877-LOVE127); 2010 Back to School Event on August 21 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Trinity Resource Coaching Ministry (214-924-2127 ask for Vincent); and the Back to School Supply Drive partnership between Little Elm Public Library, Intouch Credit Union, and North Texas Spinal Health & Wellness where school supplies are being collected between August 2 and 31 for the students of Little Elm ISD (call the library at 214-975-0430 for more information).

Remember that August 20-22 is tax free weekend. Speaking of saving money, the 2011 Entertainment Coupon Books for the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area are now available at the Little Elm Public Library. The cost is $25 and a portion of the proceeds benefits the library. There are coupons for Little Elm, Frisco, The Colony, and many more. This year there are also coupons for Albertsons too.

Other new items that the library offers are bestsellers. New titles added this week include: “The Rembrandt Affair” by Daniel Silva and “Faithful Place” by Tana French.

In regards to library programs, please mark your calendars that there will not be a story time on August 18 but The Colony Public Library has toddler time on Tuesdays and Pre-school story times on Thursdays and Fridays. Call The Colony Public Library at 972-625-1900 for more information or you can pick up a brochure that has both libraries’ story time information from either library.

There is still time to sign up for the all age Texas Tornado Hockey Reading program that ends on August 25. Read or listen to 10 items and kids ages 2-12 get a free hockey game ticket. Teens and adults will be put into a drawing for a free hockey ticket prize drawing.

For more information about anything, call the library at 214-975-0430; email library@littleelm.org; or visit the website at www.littleelm.org/library .

Tina Hager is director of the Little Elm Public Library
