Series record: Poteet leads, 1-0

A year ago, Poteet took the field for its season opener against Royse City with many players who had never experienced a varsity win, and many others who could barely remember the feeling.

Last Friday, the Pirates again met Royse City, but with a very different outlook after last year's run to the Class 4A Division II state semifinals.

Poteet looked every bit the part of a team that flew under the radar last season but has higher expectations now, as they cruised to a 61-22 victory to move to 1-0 on the season.

"There is a different mindset," Poteet head coach Randy Jackson said. "We're still working really hard because we saw that is how we were able to achieve the success we did last year, but we have great leadership once again and these kids expect to win."

The Pirates will look to improve to 2-0 in their final non-district tune-up on Friday against Arlington Seguin.

Poteet got contributions from all over the roster on offense last week, amassing nearly 600 yards of offense.

Quarterback Tanner Ramsey, making his first varsity start, completed 10-of-17 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, including a 65-yarder to Blake Graham to open the scoring.

Steven Hicks got only four carries in the game, but he made the most of them, rushing for 189 yards and a touchdown.

"I thought Tanner did a very good job out there, we had nine different kids catch a pass and all three of the running backs played well and that is how our offense is made is to spread things around," Jackson said. "Steven was limited, but he did a lot of damage when he had the chance and our big boys up front did their job."

The Pirate defense, was instrumental in last year's playoff run, was solid, never allowing Royse City to stay within striking distance.

Poteet also got a huge boost from special teams, as Chase Graham returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Braxton Robinson picked up a short kick and took it 69 yards for a score on the first play of the second half.

"Anytime you are able to get big plays in the kicking game, it is a positive sign," Jackson said. "And we still feel like the defense is going to be the strength of this team and they certainly didn't do anything to prove us wrong."

Arlington Seguin fell behind early and could never quite catch up last week in a 35-28 loss to Ennis, one of Poteet's 15-4A rivals.

Seguin used a pair of quarterbacks in Austen Parker and Kelton Moore, and both provided some big plays, but the defense was unable to slow Ennis down enough to pull even.

While Poteet would like to continue to build momentum with another victory, they also understand that the need to improve is paramount with the start of district play scheduled for next week.

"We had a few too many penalties last week, not having 11 guys out on the kickoff and that kind of stuff that needs to be corrected," Jackson said. "I think that is the biggest thing this week is taking care of those mental mistakes and penalties and then trying to create more turnovers. We only had one last week and that is an area where we really think we can do better."
