Military heroes to be honored at Medical Center of Lewisville

Published: Tuesday, November 8, 2011 2:41 PM CST
Freedom has endured through the many sacrifices of those who serve in the military. Medical Center of Lewisville will pay special tribute to the many veterans on staff and family members who have sacrificed much to give each of us the freedom's we cherish today. The hospital honors those military members each and every day but with special recognition on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran's Day.

Medical Center of Lewisville pays tribute to those who are serving now and who have come before by displaying photos of staff members and family members that have served our country on the front lobby of the hospital. Those honored range from WWII to the present. Each photo is labeled with names, rank, military branch along with the relationship of that individual to one of their own.

Recently, two Medical Center of Lewisville nurses donated their time to escort two WWII veterans to see the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with Honor Flight Network. Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. The nonprofit organization transport heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans -- World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

Honor Flight DFW No. 6 departed Oct. 14 with 42 WWII vets, 42 guardians (escort responsible for each vet) and four doctors. The trip is completely free for the veterans, but the guardians and doctors pay their own way. The two-day trip includes a visit to the WWII Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, the Korean Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to view the Changing of the Guard.

Sisters Karen Kelly and Brenda Arrons, both nurses at Medical Center of Lewisville, took their father, who served 30 years in the Navy, to Washington for a similar visit two years ago. While in Washington, the Honor Flight Network was there with a group of veterans and the sisters were impressed with the program. When their father died earlier this year, they decided to honor him by volunteering for an upcoming trip. Both say it was an unbelievable experience.

Kelly served as the guardian for John Minton, a resident of Plano, who served in the Navy during WWII. Arrons served as the guardian for a veteran who also served in the Navy during WWII. Both men were grateful to have the opportunity to go on this "once in a lifetime" trip. As for the sisters, they enjoyed getting to know the WWII veterans and seeing the support of those they came in contact with.

"It was more than I expected. I'd love to go again," Arrons said.

On Veteran's Day, Medical Center of Lewisville would like to honor these heroes for their valor, bravery and dedication by extending an invitation to all Veterans to enjoy cake and punch in their Market Café from 1-3 p.m. Friday.
