As the Thanksgiving feast is finally starting to digest and the Black Friday crowds are headed home with their parcels, Frisco Square will unveil its newest attraction for the sixth annual Christmas in the Square event.
The company will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. for the new Lights on Ice Outdoor Ice Rink; however the official holiday event will begin at 6p.m.
Managing Partner for the Frisco Square, Jim Leslie said the Frisco Square was "designed to be a gathering spot for everybody."
CFO and Development Partner for the Frisco Square Cathy Sweeney said, the company is already receiving phone calls to book the ice skating rink.
"We're getting calls from even groups around the Metroplex trying to reserve a block of time to come out and bring an employee bonding event to it, or families coming in and wanting to do it for half an hour at a time," Sweeney said.
Leslie said the event is a good opportunity for children who have never really experienced ice skating.
"It's just a fun event for young families to bring their kids, and [for] a lot of them, it will be their first exposure to ice skating," Leslie said. "So it's a fun way to do that and just to enjoy the overall Christmas park that we've got at Frisco Square."
While the ice skating rink will not have a giant Christmas tree in the middle of it, Leslie said the rink will be "more intimate than the Galleria."
"It's big enough that you can do what you're capable of doing," Leslie said. "So it's kind of the perfect size in that regard because it's big enough for the experts, but it's small enough for the beginners."
The rink, Leslie said, is built specifically for the Frisco Square site and will be next to Fire House Subs on the corner of Main Street and Coleman Boulevard.
Leslie said some of the square's events include: Santa appearances, carriage rides, a balloon glow, and a snow slide.
Sweeney said this is the third or fourth year that the balloons have made an appearance at Christmas in the square.
"It's a series of about five or six hot air balloons and ... they blow their fire," Sweeney said. "It's really beautiful at nighttime."
One of the most favored attractions at the event is the light show, which Leslie said, features over 175,000 lights and includes 20 miles of cords and wires .
"All the lights are choreographed to music, we're the largest choreographed light show in the state of Texas," Leslie said. "A lot of people just turn their radios to the designated station and they listen to the music, and watch the lights dance to the music. That in and of itself is a big hit for folks."
Christmas in the Square is a free event, however some of the events do cost money, like the ice skating, which is $10 and includes the price of rental skates, Leslie said.
"You can go out there with no money in your pocket and have a grand time, or you can go out there with a little change in your pocket and have a fun time, so it's designed not to be an expensive endeavor," Leslie said.
