'Live Healthy Texas' begins Monday
By Dan Eakin, deakin@acnpapers.com
McKinney residents who are serious about a New Year's resolution to get fit this year could benefit from the Live Healthy Texas 100 Day Challenge program that begins Monday and continues through May 1.
Mayor Brian Loughmiller at a regular city council meeting Tuesday night encouraged McKinney residents to take part in the program and to once again prove that they are among the healthiest people in North Texas.
"A couple of years ago, McKinney won the Healthiest City in North Texas award," Loughmiller said. "We can continue to show that McKinney is one of the healthiest cities in North Texas."
The program provides meal plans, video workouts, healthy recipes and nutrition and wellness resources.
The fee to participate is $20, which Loughmiller noted is not paid to the city, but goes to the Live Health Texas program. Each participant receives T-shirt and a year-long subscription to a national lifestyle magazine.
Participants may form a team and register through Feb. 6 at www.livehealthytexas.org.
"McKinney is known as a healthy, active community," Loughmiller said. "This program provides an easy, cost-effective platform to kick-start physical activity and improved nutrition. Through programs like this one and partnerships with the McKinney Independent School District, we have a goal to make our community the healthiest in the country."
McKinney city employees are participating in the program for the fourth year in a row. City staff will keep track of members from McKinney who register with the code LHT CITIZENS. At the end of the program, data will show how many activity minutes and weight lost was entered from teams in McKinney. Winning teams will be eligible for prizes and recognition at a community event in May.
The sign-up process is as follows:
Step 1: Form a team of two to 10 individuals and appoint a team captain.
Step 2: Choose a team name and gather team members' email addresses and T-shirt sizes.
Step 3: Register. The team captain is to register the team at www.livehealthytexas.org.
Teams may register in the Minutes of Activity Division, the Weight Loss Division or both. The site provides a daily journal and message center to help keep team members connected and involved in making health changes to reach their fitness and weight-loss goals.
Last year, during the Mayor's "Get Fit Month" in May, McKinney residents logged more than 750 hours of activity.
Live Healthy Texas is part of the Live Healthy America program, which began as a non-profit program in 2001. For more information, call 888-282-0822, email info@livehealthyamerica.org or go to www.mckinneytexas.org/getfit.
