Correction: Scout's Honor: Gene Sera files for Collin County Court at Law No. 2
By Elizabeth Knighten, eknighten@acnpapers.com
Republican candidate Gene Sera threw his hat into the race for the unexpired term for the Collin county Court at Law seat No. 2.
Sera, who is a Boy Scout leader for his son's troop as well as a home-school parent, said he has been waiting to run on and off for 10 years.
"I base my decision upon the fact that I wanted to do it for a while, I have had an opportunity to build some experience in the area of law that this nitch takes care of and I feel that it's the right time and I'm hoping that I'm successful," Sera said. "I will work as hard as I can to get that job and if I get it great, if I don't, I can be satisfied with the fact that did everything I could to get the job."
Sera, who has worked for the Denton County District Attorney's Office for "just short of two years" he said, also opened his own solo practice in criminal law and worked in both Denton and Collin County.
When Sera heard that Lewis would be stepping down, he said he and his wife prayed about running for the seat.
"I talked to my wife and she said, 'You know what, I think maybe it's time,' ... we prayed about it and decided this was the time to do it, so we're doing it," Sera said.
Lewis' seat is also being sought by two other republican candidates: Sharon Ramage and Barnett Walker.
Sera who said his experience is "predominantly, over 95 percent" in criminal trails said he feels that he is the most experienced candidate for the position.
"I'm the only candidate that can say, he's been practicing criminal law for the last 12 years, so I feel I am the most qualified in regard to criminal matters," Sera said.
He added that he has also lived in the county for 16 years, which he feels gives him a strong connection to the community.
"I have lived in the county for 16 years, that's more years than either of the two combined by a long shot, I think I'm the most vested here in the county," Sera said. "I'm the one that's raised a family here, has helped youth in my community, has helped coach various sports teams and various sports organizations, has volunteered time in the community ... that's why I feel I'm the most connected to this county."
