Cannon joins council race

Published: Thursday, March 1, 2012 4:17 PM CST
As the week draws to a close, the candidate pool for Place 4 on the Flower Mound Town Council is getting more and more crowded.

Wednesday, resident Jay Cannon filed to run for the seat, which is occupied by Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Steve Lyda.

Lyda announced Wednesday that he plans to run for re-election and expects to officially file Friday. Thursday, former council member Steve Dixon filed to run in Place 4.

Election Day is May 12. The last day a candidate can file to run for election is Monday.

Cannon, who has lived in Flower Mound for five years, said his interest in running for a council seat began with his role as president of the Staton Oak Estates HOA.

"The last two years, I've been the president of my HOA, and I've really enjoyed that," Cannon said. "So being president of the HOA, I felt like serving on the town council would be the next step up. Plus, very few people run for a council seat, so maybe there would be a good chance that I would make it."

Cannon said he doesn't have a specific platform, though he said he looks forward to helping the town deal with a variety of issues.

"With us living near Morriss Road, we dealt with the construction that's going on," Cannon said. "So I think it would be interesting to help make some of the decisions that involves that project."

Cannon said he was never a part of the groups that formed three years ago to oppose the expansion of Morriss Road from four to six lanes. In fact, Cannon said he is OK with the project.

"The big thing for us was getting all the plantings done that was supposed to happen earlier. It's just now getting started," Cannon said. "But the actual project didn't bother me. I thought the bridge at the end of Gerault Road was a good idea."

Cannon said as of now, there are no specific issues he wants to address if elected.

"I think the town is running pretty well as far as I'm aware of," Cannon said.
