LPD presents annual awards

Lewisville police officer Chris Clements was named the 2011 Officer of the Year at the annual Lewisville Police Department awards reception Feb. 29. Other top honorees were Lt. Dan Rochelle, Supervisor of the Year; Patricia Cryer, Civilian of the year; and Grace Lemmonds, Civilian Supervisor of the Year.

The department also presented Marksmanship Awards to police officers Todd Delany, Andrea Fisher and Jose Montoya; and perfect attendance awards to Scott Austin, Paul Barron, Brett Carlson, Chang Chi, Dan Coltrain, Scott Haynes, Scott Kelly, Beth Knight, Matthew Lamunion, Courtney Letalien, Ryan Maly, Carla Michel, Michael Moore, Kenneth Naffziger, Dan Rochelle, Robert Steinle and Tommy Thomas.

Lewisville launches new support center

The city of Lewisville has launched a new online customer support center that will allow website visitors to submit service requests or complaints, easily search a database of more than 400 frequently asked questions about city services, make online water bill and municipal court payments, submit feedback to the city, and access the community calendar.

The new automated engine, developed through a contract with WebQA, will become the first online stop for residents, visitors or vendors with questions about City services or who want to report a need for service. Links to the customer support center are available on the city's homepage at www.cityoflewisville.com and the public portal also can be accessed directly at http://mygovhelp.info/LewisvilleTX.

Visitors are able to set up a brief profile, including their email address, and then can track the progress of their question or request as it is being handled by City staff. Most items also can be submitted anonymously, but then cannot be tracked by the person who made the submission.

Along with several other recent additions to the city website, including an online check register that was implemented last year, the new Customer Support Center is part of a continuing effort to make City information and services more easily accessible to Lewisville residents. A website redesign also is underway that will introduce a variety of new tools for website visitors.

LISD students display art

For the next eight weeks, the gallery at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater will shine a light on the works of art students from the Lewisville ISD. Hundreds of works created by elementary, middle and high school students will grace the walls of the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles St. in Old Town Lewisville.

Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and also during performance events at the facility.

Now through March 18, works by students from middle schools in the LISD will be featured. The art includes drawings, paintings and sculpture.

High school students will have their works on display March 23 through April 1 in the gallery following a jury process during which a limited number of works in a variety of media will be selected for display. Opening reception for the high school artists is Friday, March 23, 7-9 p.m.

Elementary students from the west FMHS and MHS clusters of LISD will have their art on display at the MCL Grand from April 4 through April 17. Opening reception for this exhibit will be Wednesday, April 4, 7-9 p.m.

Elementary students from the east LHS, HHS and TCHS clusters will show in the gallery from April 20 through April 30. The opening reception for this segment of the exhibit will be Friday, April 20, 7-9 p.m.

Easter programs set

Historic Flower Mound Presbyterian Church, Denton County's oldest church, is celebrating the Easter Season with special worship services, music, a pancake supper and an Easter Egg Hunt.

A six-week study called "Pausing on the Road to Jerusalem" will be presented during 9:30 a.m. Sunday school through April 8.

On April 1, Palm Sunday, Sunday school will be followed by worship and communion at 10:30 a.m.

On April 5, worship and communion start at 6:30 p.m. The highlight of the season will be on Easter, April 8, with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship and communion at 10:30 a.m. and an Easter Egg Hunt for the children following the service. All are welcome.

Lewisville Library sets activities

Family Craft Day will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11. Participants don't need to bring any supplies. The event is held in the Cynthia Bennett Children's Wing.

Craft-o-Rama is a craft time especially for 4th and 5th graders. The first session of 2012 will be held at 4:30 p.m. March 28. Space for each class is limited.

LegoMania! Will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25 in the Bennett Program Room. Creating with Legos takes place on the fourth Sunday of each month. Children under 6 years must be accompanied by an adult in the program.

Teen Role Playing Sessions are held Monday nights. Lose yourself in another world on March 19, playing One for All: Régime Diabolique, and March 12 and 26 with the new game for 2012, Astra Imperious: Rogue Trader. All Role Playing Sessions are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Teen Point on the second floor of the library. Teens age 12-18 are welcome.

Teen Spring Break movie break will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Teens are invited to a screening of Thor in the Bennett Program Room of the Lewisville Public Library.

The Lewisville Public Library teen advisory group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15. Teens will be asked to help create the teen experiences available at the library. Pick up an application at the youth service desk, and come to the meetings on the third Thursday of the month.

Gerontologist to speak at VNA

Gerontologist Dee Wadsworth will speak on "Am I Losing my Memory? Tips and Tricks for Grievers" at the Tuesday, March 13 hospice family luncheon hosted by Ann's Haven VNA.

Easter Bunny coming to Vista Ridge Mall

Grab your baskets, the Easter Bunny is hitting the trail and at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16, he'll be at Vista Ridge Mall, snuggled in his gazebo garden on the lower level near Dillard's, ready to visit and pose for photos. He'll be at the shopping center until April 7 when he hurries off to deliver eggs for Easter Sunday morning.

Hours to visit the bunny are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. Bunny visitors can choose to have a commemorative photo taken by one of the Bunny photographers. Photos start at $14.95.

Kids' Fishing Day set

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area offers many ways to enjoy the month of March with these activities:

Open House at the Minor-Porter Log House will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 17. Completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life, the log house gives visitors to LLELA a window on life in Denton County in 1870. Interested visitors of all ages are welcome to arrive at any time during the open hours and tour at their own pace. Knowledgeable volunteers will guide visitors through the structures and answer questions in this informal tour. The cost is regular admission of $5 per person; children age 5 years and under are free.

Bison Tours are now discontinued. LLELA will no longer be able to offer a monthly tour of the bison herd. The herd is moving to private land elsewhere to allow the prairie restoration area to recover from prior grazing pressure and to reduce stress on the bison during the drought forecast for this summer.

After a long dry spell, the Beaver Pond Paddling Trail is now navigable, thanks to late January rains. For information visit www.ias.unt.edu/llela.

Kids' Fishing Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 17 and from 10 a.m. to noon May 19. Angling instructors at LLELA are offering a whole morning of fun activities that will introduce children to the art of fishing. It is open to children seven years old and older. Activities will include: casting, fish identification, knot-tying, aquatic habitats, fishing rules and ethics and more. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee. Night hikes will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 6 and 8 p.m. May 4 down the Redbud Trail. No flashlights are necessary. The hike is open to everyone five years old and older. A guided paddle on the Beaver Pond will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25. Paddlers of all skill levels are invited to join LLELA's kayaking instructors as they explore the Beaver Pond Paddling Trail. No kayaking experience is necessary. The pond is a wildlife magnet and there will be great opportunities to view herons, ducks, turtles, frogs, and other wildlife species. After basic kayaking and safety instruction, the group will travel about one mile through shady willow thickets, open water and floating rafts of water lilies and other aquatic vegetation. The activity is limited to 10 paddlers, ages 10 years and up. The fee is $7 per paddler, in addition to LLELA's regular admission fee. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu.

Summer camp registration is open. LLELA camp offers children the chance to catch a tadpole, paddle a kayak, mosey down the trail, spend some time in 1869, become a biologist for a day and more.

In June, LLELA is offering two weeks of day camps for children 7-12 years old. Sign up for a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule ($120 per child) or a full week of classes for $180 per child. The Flower Mound Public Library will host the presentation "Growing Tomatoes in Texas" given by vegetable expert Bill Adams at 7 p.m. Monday, March 19 at the library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane. Learn about tomato varieties and things to grow tomatoes successfully in Texas. Adams is a retired horticulture agent with thirty years' experience at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and is author of The Texas Tomato Lover's Handbook. Registration is requested.

Texas tobacco-free kids day set

Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day (TTFKD) is an annual awareness day in Texas to encourage students of all ages to live tobacco-free lifestyles. TTFKD is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC). The goal of the event, which is on Wednesday, March 21, is to get every school in Texas involved in the effort to help children make healthy choices by not using tobacco.

Know the facts. Nicotine is highly addictive. Tobacco contains more than 7,000 toxins and more than 70 known carcinogens. In the United States, tobacco use kills more than 500,000 people every year -- more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Plus, if youth under the age of 18 are caught purchasing or possessing tobacco they are required to complete a tobacco awareness program and might have to pay a fine or go to court.

Students, adults and schools can participate in TTFKD by broadcasting tobacco-free messages on announcements, organizing students for a major educational activity or working with community partners to host an event, etc.

Annual fashion show set

The Women of Flower Mound, a nonprofit women's organization, has announced plans for its annual Spring Fashion Show Extravaganza to take place Saturday, March 24.

Proceeds from the fashion show are made available to local high school seniors for college scholarships. More than $75,000 in scholarships have been awarded to date.

The Women of Flower Mound is all about community. The organization hosts various fund raising events throughout the year to raise money and then give back to the community by also supporting for The Children's Advocacy Center of Denton, Pennies for Paige and the Flower Mound Santa Cop Program, just to name a few.

Fashions this year will be from local stores: Apricot Lane, Banana Republic, Belk's, Cavender's, Charming Charlie, Coldwater Creek, Chicks Dig It... and Guys Do, too!, Jos A. Banks, Dress Barn, Heaven Sent Children's Boutique, Ooh la la, and Silpada Jewelry.

Mall celebrates spring with kids' activities

Spring is here and Vista Ridge Mall invites everyone to come celebrate the new season with a Kids' Spring Fling from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24 in the center court.

The Kids' Spring Fling will feature face painting, crafts, games, music, prizes, giveaways and more. Plus, the Easter Bunny himself will stop by for a quick visit. Parents are invited to bring their cameras to capture candid shots with the bunny.

After his visit, the Easter Bunny will hop back to the Vista Ridge Bunny Patch on the lower level near Dillard's, where he will be ready for visits, and his helpers will be available to take commemorative photos. Photos start at $14.95.

The Easter Bunny will be at Vista Ridge Mall until Saturday, April 7. Hours to visit the bunny are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. The Bunny will take occasional breaks during the day.

Rotary to host golf tournament

The Lewisville Rotary Club will host its 14th annual "BIG FORE" golf tournament scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the Tour 18 Golf Club, 8718 Amen Corner in Flower Mound.

Master gardener series set

The Flower Mound Public Library will host the 2012 Denton County Master Gardener Association Spring Series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28 and April 4, 11 and 25 at the library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane. The free sessions are open to the public and will cover a variety of gardening topics including gardening with raised beds, drought proofing your home landscape, beekeeping and bees in the garden, and gardening in containers.

LLELA preschool program set

Preschoolers will discover wonders of nature at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area's Preschool Adventurers Program, to be held for six consecutive Fridays beginning March 30. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. The fee is $75 for all six sessions.

Children ages 3-5 years, along with an adult, will search for animal tracks, look for signs of spring, discover wildlife all around them, and explore the importance of trees, among other adventures. Each day's adventure will include a craft activity, nature games, a hike along one of LLELA's trails, songs and storytime, as well as a snack. Younger tag-a-longs may also attend, with parental supervision. LLELA recommends that adventurers and their companions wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Themes for the six sessions are:

Bunny festival set

The 25th Annual Funny Bunny Festival will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 31 at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park, 1301 Railroad St. Admission is $1 per person, free for children younger than 3.

Visit with the Funny Bunny, play carnival games, enjoy face painting and join in the annual egg hunt. Souvenir photos will be available at a minimal cost. All egg hunts will begin simultaneously in the ballfield areas, divided into age groups. Egg hunt participants younger than 3 should be accompanied by one parent only.

A pancake breakfast, prepared by Lewisville Noon Rotary Club, will be served 8:30-11 a.m. Breakfast tickets are $3 for adults (ages 12 and up), $2 for children, free for children younger than 3. The "all you can eat" pancake breakfast will be served under the pavilion. All proceeds are used to benefit Lewisville area charities such as Christian Community Action, CASA and PediPlace.

Senior center to host dance

The Lewisville Senior Center will host its first Friday dance from 6 to 9:15 p.m. Friday, April 6 at the center, 1950 A South Valley Parkway. The cost is $5 and refreshments will be provided. The band Gold River will perform country and western music.

Free tax assistance offered for seniors

Flower Mound has recently partnered with AARP Tax Aide to ensure local seniors are receiving all the deductions and credits they are entitled to on their taxes this year. AARP volunteers will be available on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through April 10 at the Shirley Voirin Social Senior Center, 2121 Cross Timbers Road. Any resident 50 years of age or older may use the free service by making a reservation in person at the senior center or by calling 972-874-6110 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.

AARP Tax Aide is managed by the AARP Foundation and is the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service to help people with low to moderate incomes.

Teen Court volunteer application deadline set

The Lewisville-Flower Mound Teen Court will hold a volunteer training session from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. Saturday, April 14, at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 West Main St. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 12.

Youth ages 13 through 17 or still in high school are eligible to volunteer as attorneys, bailiffs, judges, jurors or check-in clerks. Lunch will be provided along with door prizes for attendance and participation.

Teen Court is an alternative, voluntary program that offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for an offense in lieu of a fine. They are court-ordered to perform community service hours at a non-profit agency, as well as serving as a Teen Court juror.

Instead of paying a fine for the offense, successful completion of the court order dismisses the case from their record. By bringing the youth offender before a jury of peers, the program seeks to prevent unlawful behavior in the future while educating the offender and volunteers about the judicial system. All roles in Teen Court are filled by teenagers, except for an adult judge and a few adult volunteers.

Teen court is held twice a month on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. High school seniors who volunteer can earn a $1,000 scholarship for their participation in the program. Teen Court is open to the public and can be observed by anyone.

Spring trash-off, green fair set

Volunteers are needed to help make a difference at the Keep Flower Mound Beautiful (KFMB) Spring Trash-Off from 8:30 a.m. to noon April 14 at Home Depot, 852 International Parkway. Sponsored by KFMB, the town of Flower Mound and Home Depot, participants will be provided litter supplies, lunch, and the chance to win door prizes. KFMB will also host a green fair in conjunction with the trash-off from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Home Depot parking lot and will include kids' activities and workshops as well as educational and product booths. The first 200 volunteers to pre-register for the trash-off will receive a free T-shirt.

The Lewisville Civic Chorale will present Fauré & Rutter: Requiem with orchestra and guest artists Rebecca Winston, soprano and Timothy Bergan, bass. The show will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 North Charles St.

Casino Night to benefit Seniors in Motion program

Seniors in Motion Auxiliary Inc. (SIMA), the nonprofit organization supporting the town of Flower Mound's Seniors in Motion (SIM) program, is seeking sponsors for its second annual Casino Night fundraiser.

Casino Night, scheduled from 7-10 p.m. April 21 at Pinewood Hills Senior Living Community, will feature hors d'oeuvres, beverages, music, Las Vegas-style casino games, and prizes. Last year, the event raised $4,000 benefitting the SIM program.

This year, SIMA is seeking a title sponsor at the $1,000 level, table sponsors starting at $150, and program sponsors starting at $25. In-kind donations are also welcome and will be used in the silent auction and as door prizes. Lake Lewisville Ducks Unlimited will host a Family Crawfish Boil Saturday, April 21 at Lake Cities United Methodist Church, 300 East Hundley Drive in Lake Dallas. The event will start at 5 p.m. and will feature a crawfish boil prepared by Chefs from Le Cordon Bleu, live music by Jay-B & the Zydeco Posse, raffles, games and auctions.

DCTA schedules public hearings

Denton County Transportation Authority has scheduled a series of public meetings to present the results of a recent community survey on transportation needs and to receive input on recommended service changes to take effect in August.

People who live, work or go to school in Denton County are invited to attend any of the scheduled meetings and provide additional feedback for consideration during the planning of the service changes.

The meetings will begin with an open house at 6:30 p.m. allowing residents to talk one-on-one with DCTA staff, followed by a presentation from DCTA representatives on survey results, ridership data and key findings. The meetings will include a presentation of proposed service changes and plans to improve existing fixed-route and A-train service levels.

The meeting in Lewisville will be Thursday, May 3, also at City Hall. Persons with hearing or sight interpretive service needs are asked to contact DCTA at least two business days in advance of the meeting at 972-221-4600 or dleggett@dcta.net.

Formed in 2002 and funded in 2003, Denton County Transportation Authority has been focused on an aggressive service implementation strategy to address the mobility needs of Denton County residents.

The Greater Lewisville Newcomers Club meets at 9:30 a.m. every third Wednesday of each month at Lewisville Church of Christ, 901 College Parkway in Lewisville.

Voices of Flower Mound sets rehearsals

The Voices of Flower Mound is a no-audition, mixed community chorus, directed by Mary McGuyer. Selections are normally popular tunes from radio, television, musical theater or movies, as well as seasonal favorites. Voices of Flower Mound performs major concerts in May and December each year, plus additional performances for special occasions such as July 4, Veterans Day, etc.

Rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in the choir room at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, 6101 Morriss Road.

The Voices of Flower Mound also has a junior choir, for ages 7 through middle school, which rehearses Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. in the same location.

KLB to giveaway light bulbs

Keep Lewisville Beautiful is giving out free CFL light bulb four packs to Lewisville residents to help reduce the use of electricity in Lewisville. First Choice Power awarded KLB a $2000 "Reduce Your Use" Grant earlier this year that makes this program possible. To get the free CFL bulbs, stop by the office on 101 W. Main St. Suite 102 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Light bulbs are on a first come, first serve basis. Must be a Lewisville resident and show proof of residency (driver's license, utility bill) to receive your light bulb pack. Limit one pack per Lewisville address.

TV series seeks participants

"My First Place," an HGTV series, is looking for first-time homebuyers and their real estate agents in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The show is looking for fun, high-energy people who are just starting the home-buying process for their first place and would like to share their story with HGTV. Taping takes place this fall and winter. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic buyers with a unique story to tell and a desire to share their experiences. Singles, couples and families are all invited to apply.

Candidates who complete taping will receive a monetary gift as part of the show and also a DVD copy of their episode to document their first home- buying experience for all time.
