The Lewisville Police Department took part in the largest Medal of Honor recipient motorcade Wednesday.
Organizers of the motorcade said the motorcade stretched 7 to 8 miles with more than 400 vehicles and 13 different agencies participating. The motorcade began the parking lot at Highway 114 and Freeport Parkway and traveled to Gainesville.
Capt. Jay Powell said one Lewisville patrol officer participated in the motorcade, and a few off-duty officers participated in the motorcycle portion of the motorcade.
"It is such a tremendous honor for the men and women of Southlake DPS, many who are veterans themselves, to be a part of this annual event to honor our nation's veterans," said Southlake DPS Police Chief Stephen Mylett. "They proudly served our country, and they deserve our unwavering support and gratitude."
When the honor ride first began, Southlake was the first motor unit to participate. Southlake has been listed as lead motors and probably will again, said Kim Leach, Southlake DPS spokeswoman.
"The motorcade is a great expression of gratitude to these living heroes, and our public safety agencies are proud to be participating," said Deputy Constable King, who coordinates the escort.
