Setting the pace: Celina stars in Texas Relays

Published: Wednesday, April 4, 2012 12:53 PM CDT
Competing against Class 4A and 5A teams didn’t seem to bother the Celina track teams at the 85th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

The Bobcats’ marquee triumph may have come via a come-from-behind effort from senior Zac Bilderback during the 4x400 meter relay to earn first place over Desoto.

“It was an amazing thing,” said Bill Elliott, Celina head coach.

Joining Bilderback was senior Jesus Vargas, juniors Cole Stallcup and Ben Thiel.

Celina’s time of 3:14.08 didn’t just give the Bobcats a gold medal at the Texas Relays though, the time set a new record for the event as the fastest time in the country.

“It’s kind of incomprehensible,” Elliott said. “For us to be a 3A team and running faster than any school in the country is pretty amazing.”

The relay team joined senior Jordan Roos in earning gold medal honors.

Roos took first in the shot put (64-02.00) over Rio Grande City’s Alex Garza. The distance was the No. 1 posting for any high school athlete in the country, making it two events that Celina now owns nationally.

“We weren’t even sure [Roos] would be ready in time for the meet,” Elliott said.

Roos is only five months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL. The senior also earned an eighth-place finish in the discus (106-06).

“These athletes pay a huge price with the dedication and hard work they put in,” Elliott said. “Track is a tough sport.”

Senior Jake Lavey came in 19th during the event (40-03). Hayden Reed of Little Cypress won with a throw of 186-02.

“[Lavey] was a little disappointed with how he threw,” Elliott said. “It was some good exposure for him though.”

On the girls side, senior Kaylyn Schultz was 10th in the high jump (5-03.00). Winning the event was Hallsville’s Darby Graff (5-08.00).

“We were pleased with how we did,” Elliott said.

Celina will now prepare for the District 10-3A Meet, which is next Wednesday and Thursday in Van Alstyne.

“Hopefully now that they’ve had that exposure and experienced that, they won’t be as nervous in the district meet and the state meet,” Elliott said.
