Football: Jags host Lewisville, Marcus preparing for Plano Senior

Published: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 8:15 PM CDT
Flower Mound's football team (1-2) will look to build on its first District 8-5A victory -- a 42-35 win Friday over Plano West -- at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the Jaguars play host to Lewisville for their Homecoming game.

The Farmers (0-3) are still seeking their first win in district and are coming off a 36-0 loss to Hebron.

"It's another big game for us," said Cody Vanderford, Flower Mound coach. "We need another win and Lewisville is a team that presents a bunch of challenges. We're going to have to play well."

Lewisville quarterback Matt McDougal will be making his second start of the season taking over for injured quarterback Cory Duran.

"Matt's been progressing," said Dick Olin, Lewisville coach. "But Flower Mound is going to be a tough team. They're really good on offense and have been playing better on defense. I know they've lost a few games, but they've played very good teams and have played them close."

While Lewisville's quarterback is making his second career start, Flower Mound quarterback Marshall Williams leads the district -- and area -- in yardage (2,400) and touchdown passes (24).

"They throw it around a lot," Olin said. "They'll use quick screens, inside and outside routes and will try to go deep a lot. [Williams] looks good and is in a quarterback-friendly system. They don't run the ball quite as much as they did last season with Hunter Lee, but they've been doing it more lately and have been effective."

Defensively, Olin believes the Jaguars will try to pressure McDougal and the Farmers.

"They run a 3-3 stack defense," he said. "They do a lot of blitzing and play a lot of man coverage. We'll have to play well on the line."

Like the Jaguars, Lewisville runs a spread offense.

"It's a spread attack but it's a little bit different than ours because they look to run the ball a lot more," Vanderford said. "And they probably throw a few more screen passes where we like to get a little more vertical. It starts with stopping the run for us. You can say that about any team, but even more going against Lewisville. They have talented backs and talented receivers that can run after the catch."

When Flower Mound has possession, the Jaguars will look to exploit matchups.

"Defensively, they play well and are very athletic," Vanderford said. "They really fly around to the ball. We're going to have to handle their pass rush and our receivers are going to have to win one-on-one battles. And we have to be able to run the ball effectively when the opportunity presents itself.

"Everbody feels good coming off a win," Vanderford added, "but we have to continue to correct the little things if we want to continue winning."

Last season, Flower Mound defeated Lewisville, 48-14.

While the Jaguars are seeking their second win of district, Marcus will be looking to improve on its first 3-0 start in district since at least the 2001 season when it faces Plano Senior at 7:30 p.m. Friday from Tom Kimbraugh Stadium in Murphy.

"We're pleased where we are right now but we're really just focused on Friday and Plano," said Bryan Erwin, Marcus coach. "You can't worry about what has happened or what is going to happen. You have to take one day at a time."

Marcus will have to handle a Plano offense that possesses the ability to run or throw the ball.

"They have a big, talented quarterback who can spread the ball around and is good in the pocket," Erwin said. "And they have a couple of capable backs that can do some different things. We have to stop the run, but we also have to really get to the quarterback. We've been doing a good job of that lately, but we have to continue to get better."

While Marcus is yet to lose in district, Erwin believes the team still has plenty of work to do.

"We have to get more consistent," he said. "We've played well at times but we've also played poorly at times. In the last two or three games, we've had some lapses and have played very poorly in the second and third quarters. We have to correct that and play a full game."
