Win some, lose some: Boyd softball advances as baseball team heads home

After splitting a pair of close games to push its area-round playoff series with Mesquite to a decisive Game 3, the McKinney Boyd softball team swung things their way on Saturday with a comfortable 7-3 win.

The Lady Broncos (29-6) racked up 10 hits and Jill Nicklas and Bailey Jo Jones tripled to push past Mesquite and into a matchup with Temple in the regional quarterfinals. Temple defeated Longview, 14-0, and Garland, 7-2, in one-game playoffs in the bi-district and area rounds, respectively.

After dominating Richardson in the opening round, 22-0, the Lady Broncos cruised into their series with Mesquite on a 17-game winning streak that included a perfect run through District 10-5A. It had been months since a team challenged Boyd, but the Lady Skeeters managed to end their win streak with a 2-0 win in Game 1.

Cross country: Marcus boys, Flower Mound girls claim District 8-5A titles

Published: Saturday, October 29, 2011 2:11 PM CDT
DENTON -- For the 19th time in program history, Marcus' boys cross country team competed in a district meet and returned to Flower Mound as champs.

Despite missing its original No.3 and No. 5 runners, the Marauders took first as a team Saturday at the District 8-5A Meet at North Lakes Park in Denton, finishing ahead of Hebron and Flower Mound. The Lady Jaguars, meanwhile, claimed the title on the girls side ahead of Hebron and Marcus.

The strength and competitiveness of what many believe to be the toughest cross country district in the state was on full display Saturday as just seven points separated the first and third-place teams on the boys side, while Flower Mound finished 14 points ahead of third-place Marcus.

Individually, Hebron's Kevyn Hoyos won gold (15:11.73), while Flower Mound's Safiya Belbina (11:10.19) earned top honors on the girls side.
