Win-win: Boyd raises money for cancer research, sweeps Rowlett

McKinney Boyd (33-5 overall, 8-0 district) opened the second round of district play Tuesday night with a dominant three-set sweep of Rowlett (25-10, 25-21, 25-15). In front of a raucous home crowd, the Lady Broncos made their win look inevitable from the start by jumping to a 17-0 lead in the first set before Rowlett even got on the board.
Impressive as it was, that wasn't even the Lady Broncos best set of the season. That honor goes to their 25-1 win over Garland Lakeview Centennial, which saw them jump to a 22-0 lead before surrendering a point.
“I was very proud of the way we showed up,” said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. “In big matches like this with a lot of fans, I know the adrenaline is going and it can either go where we're completely crisp and scoring a lot of points or it can go the other way around where you're serving out of bounds and your adrenaline is overcompensating for everything.
It was the Lady Broncos' annual Pink Out match and they helped raise over $1,000 for breast cancer research through donations, t-shirt sales and the auction of a volleyball signed by the team. Boyd nurse Valerie Wright, who is battling breast cancer, spoke before the match and was honored by students and athletes.
Along with helping a charitable cause, Tuesday's win continued the Lady Broncos' undefeated district run that has seen them drop just one set, a two-point loss to Rowlett during the first match of the district season. The Lady Eagles weren't so fortunate this time around, and though they managed to rebound from their first-set performance to keep closer through the second and third, Boyd was in control the whole way.
“When you're playing a game against this caliber of a team, you need to play-up and be ready to go,” said Tanika Taylor, Rowlett head coach. “We were trying to get a win for district and tie up the district race, but we didn't show up. A lot of props to McKinney Boyd. They were disciplined, they were very aggressive and I think that's what we were lacking tonight.”
When tied with Rowlett at 8-8 early in the final set, the Lady Broncos took 12 of the next 14 points, including six straight, to take a more commanding 20-10 lead. No matter how close the match got, they were able to find the little extra needed to blow past the Lady Eagles.
“It was good to see fight in them,” Taylor said. “We still have the whole district race to finish. This was the first game of the second round, so there's definitely room for improvement. We'll go out and try to get all the rest of these games, but it would have been nice to have this one.”
Megan Mollett led the Lady Broncos with 22 kills and hit .388 on the night with just three errors. Drew Darling had 10 kills, Brantlee Reid contributed 22 assists, Brittany Phelan tallied 13 assists and libero Kaley Seaber turned in a great defensive performance and helped keep the team, which hit .257 combined, focused.
“[Kaley] keeps the energy up on the court when it can get a little bit down,” Quinn said.
Leading up to Tuesday's match, the Lady Broncos changed their focus in practice from minimizing mistakes to making big plays. It paid off, as they made plenty against Rowlett.
“They know not to make mistakes, but what I want them to do is to continue to be really aggressive and we did that tonight,” Quinn said. “Our offense was aggressive the entire tonight. Our passing weakened up a little during the second and third games, but overall they played pretty solidly. We don't have too many complaints.”
And while the Lady Broncos have been dominating their district opposition so far, they're undefeated run isn't complete yet. They were a few wins away from going undefeated in district last year before losing their lone match to Sachse, who still remains on the schedule.
“They're not a team to be taken lightly,” Quinn said. “We've got to make sure we stay focused.”
