West Mesquite boys, Rowlett, Sachse, girls move on in soccer playoffs
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
After inclement weather delayed Tuesday's scheduled soccer playoff games, it was worth the wait for three local teams that advanced in the soccer playoffs.
The West Mesquite boys, Rowlett girls and Sachse girls all punched their ticket to the next round of the postseason by picking up victories on Wednesday night.
The Wranglers had a bye on the final day of the regular season and also had a bye in the first round of the playoffs, meaning they had not taken the field for more than two weeks.
The Wranglers, who improved to 19-3-5 on the year, advance to the Class 4A Region II quarterfinals where they will face Forney on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.
Those two teams split the two meetings during the 23-4A season.
Against Molina, West Mesquite got goals from Isai Velasquez and Ever Parada and the defense did the rest to send them to the third round.
The Rowlett girls cruised past Berkner in a 4-0 victory in a Class 5A bi-district playoff game at Berkner High School. The Eagles (19-2-3) got a pair of goals from Grayson Byrd and additional scores from Bre Powell and Haley Rodriguez.
Sachse enjoyed a similar result, as it used goals from Chelsea Followwell and Azalea Smith in a 2-0 win over Skyline in a bi-district playoff game at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.
Both the Eagles and Mustangs will have to make a quick turnaround as their area round playoff games are slated for Thursday.
Rowlett will face Temple at 6 p.m. at Mansfield's Vernon Newsom Stadium, with Sachse taking on Belton at the same site in the second half of the doubleheader.
Several other local teams did not fare as well as they had their seasons come to an end.
In the Class 5A playoffs, Rowlett was edged by Richardson in a 1-0 loss at Homer B. Johnson Stadium, while Horn dropped a 3-0 decision to Belton at E.H. Hanby Stadium.
The Poteet, who had a bye in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs, lost a heartbreaker to Thomas Jefferson in a 3-2 shootout loss at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
On the girls side, Horn fell to Belton, 4-0, in a bi-district playoff game at E.H. Hanby Stadium. Poteet, meanwhile, had its season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Wylie East in a Class 4A area round playoff game at Royse City.
