40 Fourth: Lady Panthers set program mark at state track meet

After taking the district and regional ranks by storm, the Plano East girls track and field team raised the bar a bit further Saturday at the UIL Class 5A State Championships.

But in a whirlwind of emotions for all involved at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, the Lady Panthers were no different in finishing a program-best fourth place in the team standings with 40 points.

East's quest for the first UIL team title in school history fell 10 points short of DeSoto (50), with Garland capturing second (46) and Mansfield Timberview claiming third (41).

Push Eject: Plano pair tossed in eventful 10th inning

Published: Tuesday, March 6, 2012 7:24 PM CST
The main takeaway from Monday night's District 8-5A softball opener between Plano Senior and Allen was that the Lady Wildcats picked up a 2-1 victory.

But before reaching that outcome, both teams had to deal with some unusual circumstances. Specifically the Plano dugout, which was warned numerous times about items such as using bats as artificial noisemakers and having players standing in the doorway of the dugout without helmets on.

"There are a lot of ticky-tack rules in softball that never really get enforced," said Debbie Evans, Allen head coach. "But for whatever reason, they got enforced tonight."

Those warnings paled in comparison to the top of the 10th inning though.

The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead when senior Savannah Finch's two-out knock into left field was ruled by the home plate umpire to have hit the ground despite Lady Wildcats junior Julia Knight insisting her diving catch was successful. That hit scored senior Mikayla Clark and gave Allen a 1-0 lead.

Matters got worse for Plano when assistant coach Debbie Hutchinson and senior pitcher Kat Batey were ejected from the game following the discussion as to whether Knight had made the catch or not.

"The umpire said I had cursed," Batey said. "I didn't say one word and I would never be that disrespectful (to the umpire)."

Batey and Hutchinson watched the remainder of the game from outside the field.

And while those two didn't have the best view, they could still see the game in the bottom of the 12th inning when Batey's replacement in the lineup, junior Ashlee Begis, knocked home the game-winning run for a 2-1 Plano victory.

"This was a huge win," said Cynthia Zea, Plano head coach. "The girls played well and were able to battle through some adversity tonight."
