Dragons break Bell, 45-13
BY Matthew Costa, Special to the Times
Normally giving up more than 350 yards of offense within a half is a recipe for disaster.
But on Friday night, Southlake Carroll (2-0) was able to come up with the big plays the LD Bell Blue Raiders (1-1) could not in a 45-13 win.
The Dragon's were able to implement the bend but don't break defense en route to containing a strong offensive from the Raiders, who only managed to put up 13 points despite gaining more 500 yards on the night.
Southlake's defense thrived in part because of how effective its offense was all night. Junior quarterback Kenny Hill was able to find a groove early with his offense, passing for 202 yards on 12-of-22 attempts with three touchdowns in the first half alone.
Wasson noted how crucial his quarterback was to the team's successful outing.
"[Hill is] definitely a playmaker and great on offense all around," he said. "I think we all really benefited from the great protection the offensive line offered all night and Kenny would be the first one to tell you that."
Carroll's quarterback would be tested early, however, as the Raiders marched 67 yards on their opening possession to kick a 28-yard field goal and take a 3-0 lead. Carroll respond quickly with a 15-play drive marked by Hill's combined 59 yards and a Drew Brown 24-yard field goal to tie the game.
The Dragon's would not trail the rest of the night, using senior receivers Peyton Williams and Sabian Holmes to open up a 31-10 lead at the half. Williams and Holmes combined for more than 240 yards and all four of Hill's passing touchdowns.
"Those two really stood out to me tonight," Hill said. "They were just absolute beasts out there all night long."
Even with a 21-point margin at halftime, Wasson didn't feel comfortable.
"It really didn't feel like a big lead at the half," he said. "But that's why I'm going to give a lot of credit to all of Bell's skill players and their O-line. They really kept at it in the first half."
Coming out of the half, Hill didn't give his coach much to relax with, throwing an ill-fated pass which was intercepted by Bell defensive back Kenny Diaz. That turnover ultimately resulted in a 40-yard field goal, slimming the margin down to 31-13.
The defense would not allow anymore scoring chances though, stopping the Raiders on three consecutive drives that ended with unsuccessful fourth-down plays.
"They really came out of the half strong and motivated," Hill said. "We have a lot of confidence as a group out here and the second half really showed it when they turned it up on defense."
Hill put the game out of question midway through the third quarter with a 21-yard touchdown strike between defenders to Williams and would later run in the final points of the evening on an 11-yard scramble to set the final at 45-13.
After the game, Wasson referenced fourth-down stops and a blocked field goal as the game's ultimate turning points.
"Stops by our defense lead to points," he said. "It's just that simple because our line held up well enough that all we needed were the stops."
The Dragons will look to continue their early undefeated run at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they hit the road to face Richardson Berkner.
