Mesquite to host 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
As the qualifying season continues for area high school football 7-on-7 teams, the Mesquite ISD squads will not have to travel far for a chance to earn a berth on Friday, as the city hosts a state qualifying tournament.
All five MISD teams are expected to be in action in the 16-team field, which is scheduled to be held at four different locations starting at 5 p.m.
Mesquite is in Pool A along with Richardson Pearce, Sherman and Wylie and will compete at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
North Mesquite is in Pool C with former district rival DeSoto, Grand Prairie and Arlington Seguin and will compete at the North Mesquite High School practice field.
Horn is in Pool D along with Dallas Conrad, Rockwall and Wilmer-Hutchins and will compete at Forester Stadium in Dallas.
All four pools will start play at 5 p.m. and each team will play three games. The pool winners will compete in the semifinals at approximately 8:30 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium with the championship scheduled for 9:30 p.m., also at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Both of the teams that make the finals will earn a spot at the 2012 State 7-on-7 Tournament, which will be held on July 20-21 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
