On Saturday, May 19, more than 100 Plano area Girl Scouts gathered to celebrate Service Unit (SU) 155's achievements for the year. Ninety-six girls took a ceremonial walk across a flower-covered bridge to represent their advancement to the next level of scouting. Each Girl Scout level was represented, from the youngest of Daisies, to Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Four girls who are soon to be high school graduates took their final steps as Ambassador Girl Scouts over the bridge to become Adult Girl Scouts.
Top cookie sales for the Service Unit were recognized -- Kulann Jackson and Kate Gilkinson sold more than 700 boxes each, and Abby Hendrix sold 500 boxes. From this year's cookie sales efforts, SU 155 troops donated more than 5000 boxes of cookies to military troops and numerous charities through the Troop to Troop and Gift of Caring programs. In addition, Haley Plenger was applauded for submitting the winning t-shirt design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts.
During their Girl Scout years, girls have the opportunity to earn the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. Each award encompasses earning badges, developing career, project management, and leadership skills, and completing a service project that benefits their community. The level of difficulty increases with each award, and a Gold Award recipient must also lead a team of volunteers as she dedicates at least 65 hours to complete her project. Twenty-two members from Troops 1625, 2738, and 3062 were honored for receiving the Bronze Award and eleven girls from Troops 1674 and 2613 earned the Silver Award. Elizabeth Boddicker, Christina Crandall, and Julia Goebel from Troops 688 and Binaifer Alpaiwalla and Shreya Reddy of Troop 3164 were recognized for completing the Gold Award. Earlier this month, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) also awarded the Betty Richardson Gold Award Scholarship to Christina Crandall and Julia Goebel.
"This ceremony highlighted Girl Scouting's positive impact in building leadership skills in girls in grades K-12," commented Chief Administrative Officer for GSNETX Debbie Roling. "These young women have accomplished significant contributions benefitting their community through service projects and with older girls serving as role models for younger girls in the program."
The ceremony took place in the sanctuary of Messiah Lutheran Church, with family and friends in attendance. The program opened with a traditional flag ceremony followed by the reciting of the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Amy Plenger, SU 155 Manager, served as mistress of ceremonies.
"Seeing girls bridge at all levels of Girl Scouting from Daisies through Adults really brings home the message that scouting is a progression, said Plenger. "Leaders are not developed overnight. With steady encouragement and many opportunities they discover more about themselves and the world around them, connect with other Girl Scouts and community partners, and take action to make the world a better place."
The program ended with the beloved Girl Scout song, "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That's how long I want to be your friend." As signified in the words of this tune, the full circle of Girl Scouting was celebrated on this day.
Service Unit 155 is a part of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and is comprised of 35 troops in central Plano. Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. To learn more, visit gs-su155.com or gsnetx.org.
