Plano alums taken in MLB Draft

Day 3 of the 2012 First-Year Player MLB Draft took place Wednesday and three Plano ISD alums came off the board.

Texas Tech catcher Bo Altobelli, a Plano Senior graduate, was selected in the 21st round (640th overall) by the Minnesota Twins.

Nebraska center fielder Kale Kiser and TCU left fielder Jason Coats, starters on Plano West's 2008 Class 5A State Championship team, were both selected by the Chicago White Sox. Kiser was taken in the 23rd round (711th) and Coats was selected in the 29th round (891st).

Kern, Miles in TGCA All-Star Game

Plano East senior Holly Kern and Plano Senior senior Kristen Miles have been selected for the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Softball Game.

The game is for top seniors across the state.

Kern and Miles will play for the East team in the Class 5A-4A contest, which is set for 7 p.m. July 10 from the Workman Complex in Arlington.

Taylor nabs another IFL honor

For the second straight week, Allen Wranglers receiver Ramonce Taylor has received an IFL Player of the Week award.

Claiming Special Teams honors in Week 14, Taylor was named IFL Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. Taylor continued his torrid special teams pace, scoring on a kickoff for the third straight week, but the Longhorns' product also earned reps at receiver with seven catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns.

"Fans know Ramonce from his time on the National Championship Texas team and they know what a special player he is," said Dixie Wooten, Allen offensive coordinator. "Ramonce is finally comfortable playing the indoor game and it has really shown the past three or four games."

Dagerman named dual All-American

Emory senior Ryan Dagerman, a 2008 Plano West graduate, recently closed his collegiate career.

He did so by earning first team All-America honors after tying for seventh at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships in Florida.

With that result, the former Wolves linkster became just the second player in Emory history to have been a three-time All-American (Mike Lebow). Dagerman was a second-team All-American in 2010 and third team in 2011.

Dagerman, who closed the season with a new school record average of 73.0, also finished his run at Emory with a career-best average of 74.38.

The West alum excelled in the classroom too.

That much was confirmed Wednesday when Dagerman was named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Plano-East alumni football game

Football season may be on hiatus, but the Plano Senior-Plano East rivalry will continue at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 from Clark Stadium.

Set up by FootballLegendsofTexas.com, the Wildcats and Panthers will hold an alumni game.

Both schools are still looking for alumni that can participate as part of the cheerleaders, dance team, band or game itself. The player rosters are about half full with practices starting last week.

The organizer is attempting to recreate all facets of a high school game, down to the referees, announcers and custom made jerseys.

Lions net all-district, all-state honors

Prestonwood Christian Academy baseball and softball has been honored for accomplishments on the district and, for some, state levels.

The Lions baseball team boasted a pair of TAPPS I-5A first team all-district selections in Nik Gifford and Casey Maack, who were also honorable mention selections for the all-state team. Second-team district honors were handed down to Sam Carter, Garrett Paulette, Michael Sheehy and Cameron Yates, while Tristan Metten was named honorable mention for I-5A.

The Lady Lions were in the all-district fray as well, with Michaela Pendley and Hadley Scott earning second team spots and Ashley Reynolds claiming an honorable mention nod for softball.

Collin College tennis ranked

Following the conclusion of spring tennis season, the Collin College men's and women's teams sit among the nation's best.

The men were third in the country while the women clocked in at sixth in National Junior College Athletic Association competition.

Plano native Donovan McSeveney earned individual accolades as well, named first-team All-American for singles and first-team All-American for doubles alongside teammate Brady Borhnstedt.

The Collin boys placed third at the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships, tying with Georgia Perimeter (37 points), one point back of second-place Tyler.

The Lady Cougars tallied 28 points en route to their sixth-place finish.

Celebrity HR Derby coming to town

Each summer, a cluster of standout pro athletes and sports figures take to Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco for the Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game.

This year will be no different, with the game hosted by Dallas Mavericks standout Dirk Nowitzki. Before Dirk and Co. hit the diamond, the celebrities will duke it out in the Baylor Medical Center at Frisco Celebrity Home Run Derby.

The event is slated for June 30 at 5 p.m., with the actual ballgame slated to follow at 6. The public is invited to participate as well, although those interested must try out by June 22 at HITS400 in Plano. Four hitters will be selected to compete against the celebrities on June 30.

Tickets for the game itself start at $7 with proceeds benefiting the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation and the Heroes Foundation.

Plano summer football camp

Plano Senior is holding three football camps this summer.

Taking place June 11-15, June 18-22 and July 9-13 (from 9 a.m.-noon each day) the camps are available for $90 per person. There is a $4 add-on for non-Plano residents.

The camps will focus on learning the Wildcats plays and traditions from the coaches themselves.

Those attending should wear cleats or tennis shoes, old clothes and bring water. Registration is at: planoparks.org or: 972-941-7278. For more info, contact Plano head coach Jaydon McCullough at: 469-752-9500 or: Jaydon.McCullough@pisd.edu.

Figueroa injured, off UFC card

West Plano Crossfit product Edwin Figueroa's return to the UFC will have to wait.

The bantamweight announced Saturday via Facebook that he has withdrawn from this month's "UFC on FX 4" fight card due to injury.

Figueroa (9-1) was originally slated to compete June 22 in an undercard bout against Ken Stone (10-3). That will not be the case as Figueroa's bid at a third consecutive UFC victory will be postponed.

The McKinney native claimed a split-decision win over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 in February.
