Successful season results in postseason honors for Sunnyvale softball team
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Young programs often have to endure their share of growing pains during the building process.
But some squads grow faster than other and are fortunate to enjoy success at a very early stage.
That later statement could apply to the Sunnyvale softball team, which recently completed their four season as a varsity program.
The next step for Sunnyvale was to break through in the playoffs, where it had failed to win in three previous runs.
The Raiders achieved that goal this year.
After placing third in 13-2A during the regular season, Sunnyvale got another postseason shot and were able to win a playoff game for the first time with a 10-0 trouncing of Eustace.
While the road came to an end in the following round against Grandview, this season was another building block for the Raiders are hoping to become.
"We had been to the second round because we had a bye after winning district, but this was our first actual playoff win, so the girls were excited," Sunnyvale head coach Shea Holmes said. "Every year we set goals and we want to take it further than we did last year, so now that we've won a playoff game, the next goal is to go out and win another one."
In recognition for their success during the season, several Raider players were honored on the 13-2A all-district team.
Sunnyvale had a pair of players earn superlative awards. Senior Meagan Flores, who shouldered the load on the mound, was named one of the district's pitchers of the year.
Chanlynn Turner, meanwhile, made an immediate impact during her freshman campaign and was tabbed as the 13-2A newcomer of the year.
In addition to that pair, junior infielder Megan Curry and senior outfielder Kim Gardner were named to the first team.
The second team honorees were freshman infielder Hannah Laird, sophomore infielder Peyton Winkfein and senior outfielder Kayla Marshburn, while Molly Moss and Calli Roard were named as honorable mention selections.
The remainder of the superlative honors were spread out among the other district teams.
Scurry-Rosser's Jesse Thompson was named the 13-2A most valuable player.
Palmer's Samantha Derden and Red Oak Life's Emily Fluitt joined Flores as pitchers of the year, while Tori Hightower of Red Oak Life and Georgina Salazar of Malakoff shared catcher of the year honors.
Rounding out the award winners were Malakoff's Sadie Woolverton, who was tabbed as offensive player of the year, Palmer's Delaney Wolfe, who was named defensive player of the year, and Andrea Harris, who was honored as the utility player of the year.
