Rotary club hosts public safety celebration
By Heather M. Goodwin, hgoodwin@starlocalnews.com
Every day the members of the Southlake Department of Public Safety (DPS) spend their time protecting residents and recently residents were given the opportunity to recognize their work.
On June 2, the Rotary Club of Southlake honored area firefighters, police officers and support personnel with its annual DPS Appreciation Celebration at the gazebo in Southlake Town Square. The event included fire engines, police cars and motorcycles on display, as well as live music, children's activities, a blood drive, free food and refreshments.
"This year's event went great. We had great attendance, and it seems to be getting bigger every year," said Christine Singh, chairwoman of the event. "We are so grateful to our public safety officers. This is our chance to recognize their contributions. We have sponsored this community event for the past eight years. The entire premise is to honor law enforcement."
"It was tough choice for the committee to make its final selection but I am very proud to announce this year's recipient is officer Frank Rogers," said Chief Stephen Mylett.
Rogers accepted the award with his wife Pam and children, Benjamin, Gavin, and Raven.
"I'm still on cloud nine and a little choked up that my sergeant and fellow officers nominated me for such a prestigious award. It is such an honor for me and my family," Rogers said.
Rogers was nominated for "Officer of the Year" for his work in helping to track down and capture two burglars who had been targeting Southlake. In January, Rogers met with the victim of a theft who said someone had entered her vehicle and stolen her wallet. The suspects took cash and several credit cards. Rogers later received a call from the victim stating that her credit cards had just been used nearby.
Rogers responded to those locations and got a description of the suspects and the color and make of the vehicle they used. While on patrol a few days later, Rogers located the suspects driving in a vehicle matching the description. With help from the Criminal Investigative Division (CID), the driver of the vehicle was arrested for a parking violation while the burglary investigation continued.
Officers were able to make a connection from the recent robberies to the suspects in custody.
"Due to the efforts that officer Rogers originally put forth in the primary investigation and the follow-up, his commitment to excellence in his job performance and to the safety of Southlake residents, two offenders of multiple offenses within our city were apprehended," Mylett wrote in his nomination of Rogers.
"Officer Frank Rogers represents the kind of officers we have working in DPS Police Services and serving the citizens of Southlake," Mylett said.
Rogers received a plaque, gifts certificates and other gifts from the Southlake Rotary Club.
Also during the celebration, the Rotary Club of Southlake awarded scholarships to the children of local public service workers. Singh said the event's sponsors including the chief sponsor Moritz Kia Hurst and other sponsors including Park Place Motorcars, Providence Bank of Texas, SSB, UST and many others, help fund the scholarships. During the 2011 event, the club awarded $3000 in college scholarships to DPS families.
"We wanted to give back to our officers, so we award scholarships to their children," Singh said. "It's just another way to thank the officers."
Southlake Noon Rotary Club is a non-profit organization and is part of Rotary International. The club meets on Fridays at noon at the Timarron Country Club.
