LEISD honors Top 10 graduates at dinner

Little Elm ISD recognized the Top 10 seniors of the 2012 graduation at a special dinner Monday night. Graduates were given trinket boxes by LEISD staff. The dinner also gave parents a chance to speak about their honor graduates' achievements and success.
Zachary Sherburn was named valedictorian for the graduating class. Sherburn is the son of Andrea and Keith Koppenhaver and James Sherburn. During his academic career, Sherburn was involved in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the Little Elm High School Band, and the Gay-Straight Alliance.
Sherburn said the honor of being named valedictorian shows people in this world can "succeed in doing things in the honorable way."
Sherburn has been an A Honor Roll student since starting school. He plans to attend Eastman School of Music in New York, majoring in music performance.
Salutatorian Emily Bowlin is the daughter of Jim and Deborah Bowlin. She was in the National Honor Society as the vice president and the LEHS Band where she was a drum major.
"This is so important because I feel like education is an important part in doing something in life and I feel like it's undervalued," Bowlin said. "It's really awesome to be honored for academics."
Bowlin plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin where she will be majoring in pre-law.
Third in class is Ethan Malmer, who is the son of Timothy and Lesley Malmer. Malmer was involved in the National Honor Society, the Lobo Marching Band, the Cross Country Team and Boy Scouts of America, National Eagle Scout Association.
Malmer is a member of the Order of the Arrow (Boy Scout Honor Society) and an Eagle Scout. He will be attending Texas Tech University Honors College and will major in architecture.
Garner Vincent, son of Donna McCardle and Charles Vincent, is fourth in class. He was a part of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Vincent was the vice president of the Gay-Straight Alliance, served as junior and senior class president and was the yearbook editor-in-chief.
Vincent plants to attend Southern Methodist University where he will major in business administration with a pre-dental track so he can attend dental school after receiving his undergraduate degree.
Fifth in class is Bradford Garcia, who is the son of Charles and Bonnie Garcia. Garcia was vice president of the National Honor Society, UIL Academics team president, co-pit captain in the Lobo Marching Band and was involved with the National Honor Society.
Garcia plans to attend Texas A&M University at Commerce where he will major in mathematics with wither a minor or double major in physics. He aspires to become a teacher.
Emily Wornson is fifth in class and is the daughter of Shareen Wornson. She was involved in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the International Thespian Society and the Band Wind Ensemble.
Wornson was the treasurer for the Spanish National Honor Society, vice president for the International Thespian Society, band section leader and historian. She will be attending The University of North Texas and will major in environmental science.
Seventh in class is Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of Michael and Torro Wilson. She was in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council and Future Business Leaders of America.
Wilson received perfect attendance throughout her entire academic career. She plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin where she will double major in applied learning and development and Spanish language.
Eighth in class is Gerson Larin who is the son of Rigoberto and Reina Larin. Larin was involved in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, LEHS Jazz Ensemble and the Wind Ensemble.
Larin had perfect attendance for the 2010-2011 school year. He will be attending Full Sail University where he will major in graphic design.
Megan Oard is ninth in class and is the daughter of Pamela Rubac. She was in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council and Friends of Rachel. She was also senior class treasurer.
Oard plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin where she will major in kinesiology and Spanish.
Tenth in class is Cody Matthes, who is the son of Elizabeth Halliday. He was involved in the National and the LEHS Band. Matthes overcame two bouts of bacterial meningitis that once included brain surgery during his academic career.
Matthes will be attending St. Edwards University in Austin and will major in medicine.
Graduation is set for 10 a.m. June 2 at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano.
