Tourney'ing the tables: Panthers rebound, ultimately fall in SQT semifinals

WYLIE -- The Lovejoy football team began last week as an alternate for Friday's Wylie 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament.

Uncertain to even be part of the event, the Leopards would justify their eventual entry by coming within a hairline of being in the finals. Tournament host Wylie had other plans, dashing the Leopards' latest bid for a state tournament berth with a 47-45 overtime win in the semifinals.

"I'm really proud of our kids," said Matt Green, Lovejoy head coach. "Being a late addition, they weren't prepared for this, but they came together and said that they wanted to be here."

I Saw the Sign: PCA inks three to college scholarships

Published: Friday, May 11, 2012 11:33 PM CDT
Though the athletic season has ended for Prestonwood Christian Academy, the accolades gained from the field continued Wednesday as the Lions had three athletes sign to continue their careers in college.

That class included Claud Person (football), Garrett Paulette and Michael Sheehy (baseball).

Person will be attending Arkadelphia, Ark.-based Ouachita Baptist University.

The Tigers, a Division II program, won the Great American Conference Championship last season.

"I am looking forward to this opportunity," Person said. "Ouachita has a strong program and I'm excited to be part of the team. I hope to become a better player there and help my team win more conference championships."

Person brings a winning track record with him.

In addition to being part of the Lions 2011-12 basketball team that won the TAPPS 5A State Championship, the 6-foot, 185-pound Person was a defensive back, running back and fill-in quarterback during his senior campaign with the Prestonwood football team, which advanced to the state semis.

"Claud is the type of player that can excel in so many different positions and in so many different ways," said Chris Cunningham, Prestonwood football head coach and athletic director. "Having Claud is like having three stud players. I am very proud of him and I think Ouachita is getting a phenomenal player and young man."

Lions baseball head coach Mike Maack had similar words for Paulette and Sheehy, who are headed to Abilene after singing with Hardin-Simmons, a Division III school, Wednesday afternoon.

"I am extremely excited for Michael and Garrett," he said. "And I believe they will both end up being contributors to the success of the team in a couple of years."

Paulette, Prestonwood's catcher, and Sheehy, a pitcher and first baseman for the Lions, have been on varsity for four years.

"Hardin-Simmons has a great program and I hope that I can continue to contribute to the team's success," Paulette said. "I am excited for the opportunity to play for the Cowboys and I look forward to continuing my baseball career with Sheehy."

Paulette's current and future teammate concurred.

"I am grateful for this opportunity," Sheehy said. "Hardin-Simmons is well-known for their baseball program, so I am excited about playing for the team. I am also excited to play for [15-year head coach Steve Coleman]."

Look for Paulette to take the field for Hardin--Simmons before his Prestonwood teammate as Sheehy is undergoing Tommy John surgery this offseason.

"Michael has a little longer road as he will be rehabbing," Maack said, "but I'm confident that he'll come back much stronger and will be ready to pitch after a year off."
