Having reached the playoffs in three of the past four seasons, including appearances in the regional semis and finals, success on the field hasn’t been an issue for Marcus baseball.

But for a team seeking its third coach in four seasons, stability has been.

The Marauders are hopeful 1999 Marcus graduate Jeff Sherman brings that consistency, as he has been named head coach following five seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Frisco Centennial.

“I’m in it for the long haul,” Sherman said. “This is my dream job and I can’t wait to get started. Being a Marcus graduate, and getting a chance to coach at a great school in a great district in a fantastic community, I couldn’t ask for any more. We don’t know what happened with the other coaches or why they left quickly, but this is a first-class program and we’re going to do things and play baseball the right way.”

Sherman is also looking forward to the prospects of working with head football coach and Marcus athletic director Bryan Erwin.

“It’s a great chance to go back home and I take a lot of pride in Marcus baseball,” he said. “There is great talent, obviously, but when you have people like Bryan Erwin backing you, you can’t ask for much more. I’ve seen some of his clips on YouTube … man, he’s an incredible motivator and really gets your blood pumping.”

Sherman comes to Marcus after helping lead Centennial and head coach Jason Wilson to a second-place finish in District 9-4A and an appearance in the regional quarterfinals.

“Coach Wilson was a great head coach,” Sherman said. “He’s a leader and I learned a ton from him and from (Centennial athletic director and head football coach) Mark Howard. There isn’t anyone better and I learned a lot, not only about coaching and how to run things, but about life. I’m a big believer in being a life-learner and using baseball as a motivator.”

Sherman will begin his head coaching duties in August.

“The first thing we are going to do is work as hard as we can,” he said. “We have to have that attitude and drive and play with a purpose. We’re not going to set any big goals like winning state, we’re just going to work day-to-day and pitch-to-pitch. That’s the approach we took at Centennial and we had success. We had a losing record when I got there, but each season we got better.”

Sherman believes that kind of effort can go a long way at a power such as Marcus.

“We want to incorporate and keep that tradition going,” he said. “This program isn’t just about the kids that are playing, it’s about the guys that have played and had success before them. When I got the job, I probably got about 40 texts and calls from former players telling me congratulations. They want to see us succeed as well.”

Those expectations drew Sherman to Marcus, as did his history with the program.

“We know the expectations and we aren’t shying away from them,” he said. “It’s going to be a challenge, but I know for a fact I am ready for this.

“Marcus is a special place. It’s a bunch of winners that have won state titles in football, basketball, soccer, swimming, cross country and probably a few others I haven’t named. That’s what we’re looking to do.”
