Tarell Brown football and cheerleading camp set for Saturday
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Tarell Brown's 5th annual football and cheer camp is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at E.H. Hanby Stadium.
Brown, a North Mesquite graduate, was a member of The University of Texas' national championship team in 2005 and currently is a starting cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers.
Brown started the free camp five years ago and it has taken hold in his hometown, helping hundreds of local athletes.
The Brown's Kids Foundation is dedicated to bettering the livelihood and health of local families.
In past years, Brown has been joined by former Texas teammates and current NFL players Aaron Ross, Michael Huff and Jamaal Charles, as well as San Francisco teammates such as Dashon Goldson.
This year, 10 professional players are expected to be on hand, joining current former and North Mesquite coaches, as well as other North Mesquite alumni, to conduct the camp.
The kids will be put through position-specific drills, special teams participation, competitive 1-on-1 drills and offensive and defensive simulated scrimmages.
Participants will also be instructed on proper warm-up and stretching techniques, conditioning and sports nutrition.
Cheerleader participants will be instructed by current Stallion coaches and the North Mesquite cheerleaders.
At the conclusion of the three-hour camp, Brown and the other players make themselves available for pictures and autographs.
"Tarell and all these guys have busy lives, but they stay and sign every last item for the kids, which is a special deal for all of them," Bragg said. "Tarell stresses that this is more than just about football. All the NFL players give speeches after every session and it isn't just about the game, it is about leadership, community, academics and being a better person.
"Tarell really loves Mesquite and North Mesquite High School and it is a mutual relationship with the school district and the community. It really is a special event."
Registration for the camp can be done at http://brownkids.eventbrite.com or at the stadium beginning on Saturday at 8 a.m.
