Home sweet home: Lady Titan commits to Arkansas

Published: Thursday, June 28, 2012 1:13 PM CDT
It hasn’t taken long for senior point guard McKenzie Adams to build a niche in the Metroplex.

After moving to Frisco before her junior season, Adams quickly made a name for herself at Centennial and has garnered plenty of interest in the process. With little doubt if Adams would play at the next level, the only question became where she would be for her collegiate career. That question was answered last week when the guard committed to Arkansas.

“[Adams] is such a great player,” said Wesley Charles, Centennial head coach. “She will make any program better.”

For Adams, her expected signing with the Lady Razorbacks will present a homecoming of sorts. Her father Chad played football at Arkansas and the Adams family made the move to Frisco from the Natural State.

“[Adams] kept her options open all the way,” Charles said. “She just felt like Arkansas was the best fit for her in the long run.”

Despite Charles having Adams for just one season thus far, the Centennial coach said his point guard will bring plenty to the table for the Lady Razorbacks.

“She handles the ball so well and her court vision is amazing,” he said. “She’s just a great all-around player. She rebounds and plays great defense.”

In her junior campaign, Adams averaged 19.9 points per game while adding nearly four rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest. Those efforts earned Adams a TABC and TGCA all-state selection. With such a well-rounded game, Charles said he believes Adams could see playing time for Arkansas right away.

“[Arkansas] is an up and coming program,” he said. “But she should be able to step in immediately and help them get better.”

Adams will join an Arkansas team that went 24-9 last season and tallied a 10-6 mark against SEC opponents. The Lady Razorbacks earned an NCAA tournament victory over Dayton (72-55) in the opening round before dropping a 61-59 contest to defending champion Texas A&M in the Round of 32.

Arkansas graduated five seniors and will need new leadership to reach the next level.

“I’ve only had [Adams] for one year,” Charles said. “But she immediately became a leader for our team and cares more about her team than she does herself.”

Adams will begin her tenure at Arkansas under fifth-year head coach Tom Collen.

However, before joining the Lady Razorbacks, Adams will play one more season at Centennial. Charles said the Lady Titans should figure to have a great deal of success in 2012-13.

“We think we’re a good team and we’ve got some big goals,” he said. “I’m just excited we’ve got [Adams] for another year and that she’s going to be a Lady Titan next season.”

Centennial posted a 21-14 mark last year and reached the playoffs before an opening-round loss to Rockwall spelled the end for the Lady Titans season.

Adams and the Lady Titans begin their new season in the Frisco ISD Tip Off Classic Nov. 8.
