Student councils at five McKinney elementary schools have been chosen by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) to receive Excellence Awards.

The student councils honored are those at Finch, Malvern, McClure, Reuben Johnson and Valley Creek elementary schools.

Representatives of the schools and councils were honored at Tuesday night's McKinney ISD board meeting.

Joe Miniscalco, assistant superintendent for learner support, said the five schools are among 64 in Texas to receive the national recognition this year.

"McKinney has the second-highest number of schools being recognized in the state of Texas," Miniscalco told the board.

Each year, the NAESP recognizes outstanding elementary and middle school student councils throughout the nation.

To receive national and state recognition, the student councils went through an extensive application process that includes each student council submitting a project description form qualifying their work in two of four categories: community service, student leadership, citizenship and school spirit.

Along with the project descriptions, the student councils had to provide copies of their constitution, description of how members are selected, a letter of recommendation from the school principal, a letter of recommendation from the student council president or vice president, and a photo record of student council activities.

Miniscalco said, "We are excited that five MISD elementary schools are receiving recognition for their quality work and dedication. This national award is another example of the strong leadership development occurring with our students at our elementary schools in the McKinney ISD."

Suzy Woodward, Reuben Johnson Elementary principal, said, "This is our third year to receive this award, and I'm so proud of RJE's student council."

She was at Tuesday's meeting to accept the award, as were student council sponsors Mike Dey and Marie Hayes. Lexie Malcom is student council president.

Finch and Valley Creek elementary school student councils have now won the national award twice.

On hand from Finch Elementary to accept the award were Principal Becki Hoffman, Assistant Principal Pam Voss, Avery Voss, Leslie Romero, Jonathan Magno and Christopher Gonzalez.

Valley Creek Principal Megan Richards and Sarah Dahlman accepted their school's award.

Accepting the award from Malvern Elementary were Karen Manicom, Luis Lopez and Pam Johnson, and from McClure Elementary were Principal Melanie Raleeh, Assistant Principal Cheryl Upvall, Krisi Stokan (sponsor), Abby Mank, Abby Wyatt, Addie Ratliff and Paige Chappell.
