Movies at the pool

With the summer heat out in full force, it's no surprise that people are looking for a way to escape the sweltering weather. One way people are escaping the heat is surprising, however: by watching movies not at a theater, but at a local pool.
The Frisco Parks and Recreation Department offers Dive-In Movie Night at the outdoor aquatic center of the Frisco Athletic Center on Fridays. Two dates remain for the program, July 13 and July 27.
"We especially like to put on family-oriented movies for people to come watch," said Cara Harting, special events supervisor for the department. "We poll children in [the athletic center's] Fun Club and The Zone as well as parents for movie choices."
"We just decided [adults-only night] was something we'd like to try," Harting said. "And we're providing childcare, so parents know their children are close by and safe, that way parents can have a date night if they want."
Movie night attendees who are not members of the Frisco Athletic Center will be able to use the facility's childcare service at the event for $5.
Because certain licenses are required to film movies, there is a specific selection of titles available. The parks and recreation department makes sure to pick movies that appeal to a wide audience, however.
"We can only order from a certain company because of movie rights, so it depends on their selection -- what they have for us to choose from," Harting explained. "We still try to look at some of the newer releases -- in most cases things that haven't been out that long but are still very popular."
The movie series, which is now in its fourth year, has seen overwhelming support from the community, Harting said. Typically the events sell out quickly, leaving no tickets available at the gate.
"Our movies usually sell out the day of the event," she said. "The tickets went on sale in April, and we had sold 174 tickets leading up to the showing of 'Dolphin Tale' [on June 29], but on the day of the event we sold all 500 in just about three hours."
The last remaining family night, scheduled for July 27, will feature "The Adventures of Tintin."
Dive-In Movie Night takes place 8 p.m. on July 13 and July 27 at the Frisco Athletic Center. Admission to each movie night is $5 per person. Children under the age of 2 are free of charge, although they must still have a ticket to enter.
Tickets for move night can either be purchased online or in-person at the Frisco Athletic Center. Concessions are also sold during the movies.
