While the Dallas Mavericks continue to allow players to get away via free agency, the Allen Americans continue to re-sign their core.
Allen started the week by re-upping forward Brian McMillin for a third season.
“I’m excited to be back,” McMillin said. “Allen seems like home to me now, playing here for a third year in a row.”
Like many recent signees, McMillin noted the addition of former Dallas Stars Craig Ludwig, Mike Modano, Ed Belfour and Richard Matvichuk to the ownership as a bonus.
“I was excited to hear about the positive changes this off-season with the former NHL players joining the team,” he said. “I know this will have a positive influence on the boys in the room who looked up to these guys as kids.”
In addition to being a positive influence for the team on the ice, McMillin has had a positive impact in the community by visiting schools and taking part in charity events.
Allen has addressed the blue line in the past week as well.
The Americans did so by re-signing defenseman Mike Berube for the 2012-13 season. As is the case with McMillin, this will be Berube’s third season on the team.
“I’m excited to be coming back to Texas,” Berube said. “The Allen Americans are one of the top organizations in minor league sports and the fan support is phenomenal.”
The native of Edmonton, Alberta, joined Allen in 2010-11, playing in 65 games and registering 16 points. Berube played in 47 games this past season, scoring 12 points (3 goals and 9 assists). Berube was called away from Allen at multiple points as he played five games with the Texas Stars of the AHL (his second AHL call-up following a stint with the Hartford Wolfpack in 2009-10).
“Mike is an experienced, reliable defenseman,” said Steve Martinson, Americans head coach. “He’s a solid blue-liner and we are happy to have him back.”
Allen fires up training camp in October with the season starting later that month.
