A fun night out for women
By Lexie Morrison
Women looking for a fun event supporting local artists will soon get their wish. On July 28, the Frisco Discovery Center invites women 18 years and older to the second annual Brazilian Blowout: Girls' Night in Paradise, an event celebrating the arts in Frisco.
The event supports the arts in Frisco by honoring local female artists who will have their work featured in the art exhibit at the Frisco Discovery Center. The exhibit features art from 13 North Texas female artists. The artists will be competing for the "Blowout" award, which will be judged by three members of the Frisco Arts board.
The 13 artists with pieces in the exhibit are Adrienne Harrington, Radha Chatterjee, Kristie Hunger, Brenne Morgan-McGee, Joy Kees, Barbara J. Mason, Misty Oliver, Brooke Opie-Ragusa, Meg Shaw, Lisa Stavinoha, Julie Mortillaro, Jane Bayarena and Karin Michele Anderson.
The women-only event will also feature a fashion show by Blue Door Boutique, a psychic reading, salsa-line dancing, a Title boxing demonstration, photo booth and a feature presentation of the movie "What Women Want."
"It is a local, safe venue to do a variety of women-only activities and support local businesses and art," Prater said. "This is only our second annual Girl's Night Out event, but so far the ladies love the variety of activities and shopping offered and the chance to get away with their girlfriends."
The event will serve exotic Brazilian food and drinks, such as empanadas, pulled-pork sandwiches, Brazilian coffee cookies, margaritas and Brazilian lemonade.
Products and services by Blue Door Boutique, Mary Kay, Park Lane Jewels, 3 Sirens Couture, Winkable Lashes and 31 Gifts will also be featured at the event. Activities such as Brazilian Black Jack, makeup tips and samples and a silent auction will be offered at the event as well.
Last year, more than 200 women attended the event and had positive responses to the event and its activities, according to Sharon Roland, Frisco Arts director of development.
"The feedback after last year's event was phenomenal," Roland said. "My favorite parts of the event were the fashion show, boxing, salsa and other demonstrations -- it was so much fun."
Through this event, the Frisco Discovery Center aims to support local artists and raise awareness for the arts in Frisco.
"The goal of the event is to raise awareness and support for local artists and businesses and the cultural and community-oriented activities at the Frisco Discovery Center, all while giving ladies a fun night in their city," Prater said.
Brazilian Blowout: Girls' Night in Paradise will be held at the Frisco Discovery Center on July 28 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online or by calling 972-668-5180. Frisco Arts Members will receive a 20 percent discount. Proceeds will benefit the arts in Frisco.
