Plano East's Jasmine Caston commits to Texas Tech

Published: Friday, July 20, 2012 5:29 PM CDT
Plano East senior Jasmine Caston's recent verbal commitment to Texas Tech was right on schedule.

Without rushing herself, the Lady Panthers' guard made it a point to decide on the college of her choice before starting her senior year. And in the end, the comfort and familiarity with the Lady Raiders' program paid dividends.

"I've liked Tech since the first time I visited the school," Caston said. "I just had that feeling with the coaches and the whole program that this was the right fit."

Caston's commitment culminated a recruiting process that has been in bloom for as long as she has donned the black and gold at East.

She booked an unofficial visit to the Lubbock-based campus last year that fully set the wheels in motion.

"They showed me the campus and talked about the academic side of things," Caston said. "I told them I was interested in journalism so they walked me through that program. They showed me the gym and I got to know the coaches a bit better.

"I liked the whole environment and it just felt right."

The down-to-Earth nature of head coach Kristy Curry and the rest of the Lady Raiders' staff only further fueled Caston's interest.

"Tech's coaching staff isn't like any other coaching staff," Caston said. "To talk to them, I can tell them exactly what I want."

Tech was the front-runner for the majority of Caston's recruiting venture, while other options considered included Minnesota, Memphis, Ole Miss and Texas. The situation with the Lady Raiders is an advantageous one as well, with the guard position open for the taking following the 2012-13 season when Tech graduates five seniors.

"I want to come in and make a huge impact," Caston said. "I feel like I can do that because I'm versatile as a guard. I can play 1 or 2, whatever they need from me."

Caston has a senior year of her own to conquer first, where she'll round out her varsity career in the same fashion it began -- starting for East's varsity squad.

In those three seasons, the four-star prospect -- according to ESPN Hoop Gurlz -- has carved out a niche as one of the Lady Panthers' primary scoring options. Helping anchor the team's backcourt, Caston was named the District 8-5A Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and most recently averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 assists and 2.9 rebounds as a junior.

This season, she'll be tasked with an even larger role in the wake of her backcourt running mate, Jordan Goforth, having graduated in addition to Paris Bridges, Destinee Drake and Tatiyana Smith -- four of East's top five scorers.

"We're going to go as far as we can go," Caston said. "I'm going to have to step up and help out some of our younger players this season. We're going to work hard and get to where we can get."

For now, she's just glad to put the decision to pasture.

"It's a huge lift off my shoulders," Caston said. "I've had friends asking me how it feels and it's amazing. I can now focus on enjoying my senior year and doing everything I need to do before I head off to Lubbock."
