Residents in Little Elm will have another option to fill up their gas tank or grab a specialty coffee--QuikTrip opened July 26 on FM 423 and Little Elm Parkway across from Kroger.

The new 5,700-square-foot convenience store, or c-store, features a Gen3 design that offers a redesign of both the exterior and interior of the building to promote the store's food options.

"The biggest change and real focus was we're trying to grow our food categories," said Tim Heuback, QuikTrip director of store operations. "We've always sold packaged food, but now we're migrating to fresh food."

The store will serve fresh pastries and eventually, made-to-order food. The store also offers fountain drinks, fresh-brewed coffee and teas, a whipped topping machine, grilled items, beer and wine and more.

One of the most notable new features inside the store is the free-service counter, which sells frozen treats, smoothies and specialty coffees. Customers can customize their order through two touchscreens available at the counter, which prints a ticket with their order and order number on it. An employee will make the order as soon as it is submitted.

"We find that customers get to order what they want as opposed to having a cookie-cutter menu to order from," Heuback said.

Outside, the store boasts four entry points, angled columns at the gas lanes, more parking and an angled store front that steps away from the traditional squared building.

"We did a lot of changes in the design to make it more of a food destination type building as opposed to a square box," said Heuback.

The QuikTrip in Little Elm, which is the 97th store to open in the DFW area, brings 20 jobs to the area with 10 full-time employees and 10 part-time employees. Originally based in Tulsa, Okla., QuikTrip chose to open a store in Little Elm based on population density, traffic count and access.

"It's just a good fit for us," Heuback said. "We think it's going to be really good for us."

The Town of Little Elm welcomed the new business to the area Wednesday.

"On behalf of the town, we want to welcome you to Little Elm. We wish you a lot of great success," Interim Town Manager Doug Peach said.

QuikTrip first opened in 1958 in Tulsa, and later came to the DFW area in 1999. They will be opening its next store in Dallas in five-to-six weeks and in the late winter this year, the company will celebrate opening its 100th store.
