Johnson sweeps opponents with 83 percent

Published: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 12:27 PM CDT
Rep. Sam Johnson has emerged victorious from Tuesday's District 3 Republican primary with 83 percent of the vote.

The victory is an effective end to the District 3 race, since no Democrats filed to run for the seat. Johnson, a 29-year Air Force veteran and seven-year Vietnam Prisoner of War, has represented Texas' 3rd congressional district since 1991.

"Coming right after Memorial Day, a time of gratitude and reflection for our freedoms, this victory means a whole lot," Johnson said in a press release issued Tuesday night. "I know that voters have a choice, and it's humbling that they chose me."

Johnson, who campaigned in favor of reduced spending and taxes and against President Barack Obama's health care bill, drew two Republican challengers this election cycle.

Vietnam veteran and airline pilot Harry Pierce received nearly 12 percent of the vote, while computer engineer and technology industry professional Josh Caesar received nearly 5 percent.

Pierce, whose platform included term limits for congressmen and opposition to what he called the "Islamic, homosexual and atheist agendas," expressed disappointment at the outcome of the election.

"Sam, he's got a lot going for him as an incumbent, all the advantages of an incumbent, so I did what I thought was the right thing to do, and that's all I can do," Pierce said. "I'm glad I did it because I did the right thing, and the rest of it is out of my hands."

Caesar, who also campaigned in favor of term limits, said he and his supporters ran a "campaign of high integrity" and thanked those who showed support for him during the election cycle.

"We provided the people with a choice, an alternative to somebody who's been in office for awhile, but the people have spoken," he said. "It seems they're pretty content with the current representation."

While Caesar said he has no immediate plans to seek public office again, he views the election as a good opportunity to lock down a base from which he can draw support in the future.

"It's been a very positive campaign, and there is a future for me in public service," he said. "At what capacity, at this point I don't know, but I'm certainly going to keep my doors open and see what God has in store."

Nearly 40,000 voters, or 10 percent of those registered in the district, cast ballots in the District 3 race.
