Mesquite, Horn fall at state 7-on-7 tournament
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Mesquite and Horn's bid to win a summer state championship came up short last weekend at the 2012 State 7-on-7 Tournament at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The Skeeters, who earned their spot by finishing in the top two at the Wylie state qualifying event, were strong early.
On Friday, Mesquite swept through pool play, posting wins over Austin Johnson (46-26), Friendswood (34-31) and Lubbock Coronado (52-38).
Horn, which won the Mesquite state qualifying tournament, finished in the bottom two in the pool play round and was bounced in the first round of the consolation bracket tournament.
While both teams would have liked to have moved further in the tournament, each are coming off playoff berths a year ago and they understand the results have no bearing on what happens this fall.
Mesquite made it to the championship game at the 7-on-7 tournament in 2008 but missed the playoffs in the regular season. Last year, the Skeeters made it to the round of 16 and then made the postseason, advancing all the way to the regional quarterfinals.
"It (the experience) is beneficial, but you can't get caught up thinking how that translates into Friday nights," Mesquite head coach Robbie Robinson said. "It's just so much of a different game that I am not worried about what happens (this weekend) as it affects the fall."
Horn head coach Rodney Webb, whose team made it to the state 7-on-7 tournament for the first time in school history, has similar thoughts.
"We try not to make a big deal out of it, so we don't get too excited if we win and we don't get too down if we don't do well," Webb said. "To me it is almost as if they were playing checkers. Of course, you want to win but it doesn't mean anything as far as what kind of football team we are going to be. We have had one of the most prolific passing offenses in the area in the last six years but it hasn't shown through to 7-on-7, so we don't read too much into it."
