Highland Village has second case of West Nile fever

Published: Monday, August 13, 2012 3:51 PM CDT
The City of Highland Village received notice from the Denton County Health Department (DCHD) of a confirmed case of West Nile fever in Highland Village. This, along with the early August case of West Nile fever and the July case of West Nile disease, brings the total to three West Nile-related cases in Highland Village. The Denton County Health Department reports a total of 77 confirmed cases in Denton County.

Highland Village began spraying operations in selected neighborhoods on July 5 and completed spraying of all neighborhoods within the city Aug. 2.

Although some cases of West Nile virus can be quite serious, most exposures result in minor symptoms. DCHD and the city continue to urge residents to take the proper precautions to reduce their risk of getting the mosquito-borne West Nile virus by remembering the four D’s: drain, dress, DEET and dusk/dawn. Residents should:

* Drain standing water around their homes to reduce mosquito hatching grounds.

* Dress in pants and long sleeves when outside in mosquito-infested areas, but avoid becoming too hot.

* Apply an insect repellent that contains DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) to exposed skin and to clothing when outdoors.

* Stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

The city utilizes the larvicide tablet or Bti donut in public areas where there is standing water. Residents can purchase the larvicide tablet at local nurseries and hardware stores and place in your ponds and fountains.
