One Lewisville organization has made one of its missions to bring out the leader in all residents.

The Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC) will host its Leadership Lewisville course beginning Aug. 30 through May 16. The class meets once a month. It is open to all Lewisville residents for $650. No more than 30 people may take the course each year.

"Leadership Lewisville is an invaluable tool for any citizen," said Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell. "The knowledge that you gain through the training and interaction with city, state, educational, business and community leaders provides you with the tools you need to not only benefit you, but enhance the quality of life for your community. It is a win, win for all of us."

Erin Carney, LACC events and communications director, said some of the curriculium stays the same year after year, but there are some changes.

"Often times, someone has read a new leadership book or seen great leader speak and wants to highlight their teachings," Carney said. "Things also change with each year's students. Every year students bring different personalities, which changes the dynamic of the course."

Throughout the course of a year, participants in the leadership program become familiar with the city and county and gain an understanding that as Lewisville transitions, so do the opportunities and challenges presented to business owners and residents alike. The course is comprehensive and gives participants a full Lewisville experience. It is taught by leaders throughout the community.

"As a leadership-driven organization, we must identify individuals who will not only inspire change through their outstanding potential, but will assume positions of civic, community and government leadership that will strongly contribute to our thriving community," said LACC president Matt McCormick. "The Leadership Lewisville program is an experience that stands alone, and we anticipate another successful class for the 2012/13 year."

According to the LACC, the objectives of Leadership Lewisville are to create hands-on, unique, educational experiences, to develop leadership skills, to motivate emerging leaders, to gain a working knowledge of the community and to gain an awareness of area leadership opportunities.

"Past graduates all speak of the great experiences they had," Carney said. "This course is a way to get in touch with businesses and organizations that you might not otherwise know."

LACC began the Leadership Lewisville program 26 years ago. The course was created to identify, educate, develop, and motivate future leaders for community involvement by engaging them in opportunities available in our civic and business community.
