Flower Mound proved an unwanted guest Tuesday at McKinney Boyd’s first home match of the season, as the Lady Jaguars used a powerful defensive performance to shut down their host and engineer a three-set sweep (25-21, 26-24, 25-20).

“I’m so proud of the girls, because we’ve been working on staying disciplined,” said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound head coach. “I’m really proud of our blocking. I think that allowed us to play great defense and get a lot of good touches and set up our hitters well. Our serve-receive overall was great and everything was clicking. We were working well as a team.”

Boyd kept the sets close but was never able to put together the extended run needed to take control. Flower Mound held the Lady Broncos to a .129 hitting percentage on the match by dominating the net with well-timed blocks.

“I feel like we have to respect the process of getting better, but hats off to Flower Mound, because they came out ready to win,” said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. “They came out ready to beat the state runner-up, and we need to do a better job of mentally preparing. It’s hard to turn around a mental state after you start the match.”

The opening set established the tone of the match. Flower Mound and Boyd went point for point, tying at 5-5, 13-13 and 21-21 before the Lady Jaguars closed out by taking the final four points. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the set, the Lady Jaguars were the aggressors, forcing Boyd to keep pace with them.

The Lady Broncos opened the second set well, taking a 5-2 lead before the momentum once again shifted Flower Mound’s way. The Lady Jaguars worked their way into a 9-6 lead before Boyd tied things up again, 12-12, and the process repeated. Flower Mound stormed ahead, 20-15, but the Lady Broncos out together a resilient 9-4 run to retie the game, 24-24.

Unfortunately for Boyd, ratcheting up the intensity didn’t cause the Lady Jaguars to stumble. Keeping ahead kept them applying pressure, and they closed out again on consecutive points. Flower Mound had an easier time in the decisive final set, where it was able to maintain a three- to four-point cushion over the depleted Lady Broncos.

“McKinney Boyd is an excellent team, so to win in three was a great accomplishment for us,” Brinkman said. “We still have a ways to go and a lot to work on, but it’s a good start for our team.”

Boyd was led in kills by senior outside hitter Megan Mollet, who had 11 to go along with nine digs. Senior setter Brantlee Reid had a team-high 18 assists while senior libero Kaley Seaber led the team in digs with 12. Senior outside hitter Kelly Koop also had a strong showing with eight kills and 11 digs off the bench.

Tuesday’s loss was the second in a row for Boyd (6-2), who closed out the Duncanville Tournament of Champions on Saturday with their first loss of the season: a two-set sweep against Colleyville Heritage. Boyd finished fifth overall at the tournament.

The Lady Broncos’ latest rough patch follows an excellent start to the season. They swept their initial six matches, opening the year with a straight-set win against Lake Highlands before winning five consecutive matches at Duncanville.

The Lady Broncos will look to return to their winning ways Friday when they open pool play at the Allen Texas Open. The tournament will feature many of the same powerhouse teams that recently played at Duncanville, including Lovejoy, Southlake Carroll and Coppell.
